When talking about assessment there are several concepts that are often confused or mixed up. It is therefore important to know the differences between assessment, testing and evaluation. Assessment is a process of identifying learning goals and determining how well students are meeting them. It is something that is ongoing, a process of monitoring learning and teaching. Testing is one type of assessment that formally measures learners’ knowledge or their ability to perfom a task (English language). Normally it is done at certain moments during the course, for example at the beginning, at the end, etc. Evaluation is the process of making judgments based on criteria and evidence. Evaluation is when you start to interpret and judge the results of the data you’ve collected throughout the assessment process or elsewhere. It’s the phase for decision-making. So, if you’re a decision maker, this is for you. Evaluation centers on what you’ve gathered of information and data; it’s qualitative.
