Hi, my name is Kaylee and I am a college student in the year 2023. I have read "The Case for Rhetoric and Composition" and I understand the challenges the Consortium faced while describing Rhetoric and Composition as an emerging field of study. You had difficulties naming this field because, prior to this point, no one within the academic community had ever given a concrete label or definition to this field. Furthermore, as published in 2004, you struggle to name it because the field covers many disciplines and subsections within the umbrella term Rhetoric and Composition, with some sections synonymous with each other and other sections that either clash or are completely unique to each other in comparison. Even the term Rhetoric and Composition has been decided as a general term to describe what this emerging study would entail. I also understand your stance on why Rhetoric and Composition should be named as a separate field from the established fields of English, Communication Studies, and Creative Writing. After much discussion with your peers, you believe it should be named as a separate field because not everything within those branches fit the full definition of these fields. Rhetoric and Composition could be listed as a subcategory within each field but if it was categorized as a separate field, then it would be established with more credibility and it teaches students to read their texts analytically and explore the author's rhetorical choices. As I am speaking to you from the future, digital communications such as photos, videos, and aesthetic presentation should be added to the list described on page 3 because of the prevalent use of digital technology to enhance rhetoric. I believe that Rhetoric and Composition is an accurate name to describe this field, as digital and physical media co-exist togin writing studies. I do believe that Rhetoric and Composition should be a separate field from the other established fields because in an English field, for example, the common notion would be to study literature for content and analysis, while Rhetoric and Composition would be analyzing the structure of different texts and how they entertained different audiences.
