In order to optimize maritime transportation, Honduras constructed the dry corridor, the longest highway in the Central American region, spanning 330 km with four lanes. This corridor connects Puerto Cortés to the El Amatillo border, linking the Pacific and Atlantic oceans to move goods in less than 5 hours between the two oceans. The dry canal crosses the departments of Comayagua, La Paz, and Valle. It also facilitates connections with El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. This interoceanic canal is complemented by other infrastructure projects like Puerto Cortés and Palmerola Airport, transforming Honduras into a logistical center. Port logistics are essential for competitiveness as they serve as gateways for investment and international trade. The country boasts 5 maritime ports in the Caribbean and 2 in the Pacific. In the Atlantic Ocean, there are Puerto Cortés, Puerto Castilla, Roatán, La Ceiba, and Tela. In the Pacific Ocean, San Lorenzo and Amapala ports are situated. Puerto Cortés, the largest and most efficient in Central America, is the only terminal in the region with the Secure Container Initiative granted by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This initiative allows containers destined for the United States to arrive pre-registered by the end of 2022. It anticipates a container traffic of over 795,000 TEUs and more than 6,000,000 metric tons of bulk cargo. As part of changes in the port system starting October this year, the National Port Company operates the non-intrusive inspection system using gamma rays. This system was under private concession for over 10 years. This change enhances agility, security, and competitiveness for both national and foreign investors. San Lorenzo Port is the second most important in Honduras, following Cortés. It serves as the primary entry and exit point for the Pacific Ocean. The main objective here is to transform the port facilities into a more relevant port center, generating more jobs and contributing to the holistic development of the region. San Lorenzo will conclude its port activities by December, handling more than 23,000 TEUs and almost 79,000 metric tons of bulk cargo by the end of the year. These two ports and Puerto Castilla will contribute to a traffic of nearly 1,000,000 TEUs, while bulk imports will amount to over 6,000,000 metric tons. Honduras enjoys a privileged geographical position, providing direct access to key markets and connecting swiftly with major markets via maritime routes. This allows for products to be transported to the United States in 2 to 4 days and to Europe in 14 days. By air, it takes 3 hours to connect to the United States, 6 hours to South America, and 9 hours to Europe. Investments in road, air, and maritime projects have positioned Honduras as one of the countries that have significantly improved regional competitiveness. With all these efforts, the current government under President Xiomara Castro and national and foreign investors are projecting new investments in 2023 with the execution of port projects in both land and maritime areas, enabling national and international vessels to access all maritime services offered by the National Port Company.
