A TikTok challenge once started a huge controversy, but how? Hey everyone, welcome to explaining trends episode one. First off, a TikTok challenge is when a lot of people do something tedious, hard, or dangerous and put it on TikTok. TikTok challenges swept over the platform in 2018, with the very first TikTok challenge being the Haribo challenge, where people tried to fit as many of a certain object, normally gummy bears, in a room. The TikTok challenge that started a massive controversy, however, was the devious licks challenge, where students would record themselves stealing and destroying (generally) school property. This trend came to be very controversial. This trend was extremely risky, as students would destroy or steal school/government property (mostly in the bathrooms) and record themselves whilst doing it, which could lead to suspension or even expulsion. Some schools, like Plaster High, even closed a majority of their bathrooms and had someone monitor the remaining ones from the outside. And even if the students were caught, this was still a huge nuisance to school janitors, school admins (who had to pay for the objects being stolen to get replaced), and students who had nothing to do with it that now had no soap or paper towels to wash their hands and most couldn’t even go to the bathroom, since most were now closed or occupied by the other students. No one has an explanation for why this trend started, because it’s TikTok. As of now, any TikTok video with the #deviouslickschallenge or similar on it is now removed from the platform. Nonetheless, this has left a lasting impact on schools, and hopefully, for the sake of schools, no other trends like this become popular ever again.
