Some of the myths, rumours, and misinformation surrounding Covid-19 among African communities. • Black people have immunity to the virus. False claim. We have seen thousands and thousands of black people grieving their loved ones killed by Covid-19. • Covid-19 was deliberately created in a laboratory with a hidden agenda. False claim. No proof at all. • Only older people get Covid-19. All ages can get Covid-19, but people with underlying conditions and who are older are more likely to get a more severe form of the virus. • “They” are going to use the vaccine to secretly implant microchips in world’s population. FACT: This unfounded conspiracy theory has been circulated in social media. It is totally untrue; there is no evidence at all that anyone is trying to implant microchips in anyone through vaccines. • “This Covid-19 thing is just a normal flu , it goes away by itself!” FACT: This is not a normal flu, it is a pandemic, with devastating consequences if right precautions are not taken. Stop the spread of Covid-19. Covid-19 is spread through droplets breathed out from the nose or mouth, particularly when speaking or coughing. It can also be picked up by touching your eyes, nose, and mouth after contact with contaminated objects and surfaces. Wash your hands often with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds. When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) Put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth if your hands are not clean. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects in your home, such as door handles and taps. Make sure you maintain social distancing - keep a distance between yourself and others. Travel for work, but only if you cannot work from home and provided neither you nor any of your household have coronavirus symptoms.
