I awake the next morning to the sun streaming through the large windows and onto my face. My head is pounding and my vision is still a little fuzzy but I quickly realize I’m not in my room. Sitting up with a jolt, I look around the room. Fuck, I must be in Luan’s room. I have little memory of what happened after I downed the glass of wine. “Great work Kat, you are fucking ridiculous” I sign to myself. I push myself up and swing my legs over the side of the bed. I’m relieved when I spot the glass of water and two small red pills on a tray next to the bed. Assuming the red pills are the fairy equivalent of Tylenol, I pop them in my mouth and take a big gulp of water. I place the water back on the tray and notice a note, a small black rose placed neatly over it. I take a deep breath and pick up the note, noticing the perfect black lettering of my name scrolling across the top. I don’t have to open it to know who it’s from so I slowly unfold the heavy paper. My heartbeat races as I quickly read the note he’s left. " Come find me when you are plenty rested, I have something to show you”. I blink, not sure of what the fuck I actually just read. I scan the room and notice my dress slung across a plush chair. It’s the first time I notice that I am not actually wearing it but one of Luan’s tunics. The dark fabric hangs loosely off my chest and flows over my stomach and stops just above my knee. I don’t remember taking my dress off. Did he undress me? I’m mortified even thinking about him seeing my naked body and suddenly I am filled with rage, or maybe shame? I push myself off the bed, note in hand and stroll over to the fireplace and throw the note in the fire. I stand there for a good while and watch the note incinerate into tiny pieces of ash. Part of me regrets doing it but I grab my dress and make my way slowly back to my room. I know it’s not a long walk but it still feels like a walk of shame. I have no idea what time it is but guessing on the number of servants I have encountered, I’d say it’s mid-day. To my relief, they don’t say anything to me, the only acknowledgment that I am here at all is when they gently bow their heads and go back to whatever task Luan has them hired for.
