Due to its morphological and cultural complexity, the Italian scene has always posed different and far more articulated problems than other contexts. Unique among all European architectures, Italian architecture has always negotiated its adherence to modernity through a system of filters that provided it with the possibility of mediating instances from other countries and of dialoguing, reinterpreting them, with the resources offered by tradition and history. In Italy, the “traditional modern science” method was translated with great skill and wisdom by the leading exponents of architectural thought of the time, who proposed a vision set on type-morphological studies from the middle of the last century. In that method of analysis and design, the city and its architecture were a system composed of a varied but structured collection of codified objects placed in absolute space and time. Despite their differences, type-morphological studies from Xavier Muratori to Carlo Aymonino, Gianfranco Caniggia to Giorgio Grassi and others are a foundational part of knowledge about Architecture and the city.
