IELTS Speaking Part 2 Describe an unusual meal you had You should say: 1. Who you were with 2. Where you went 3. When it happened 4. Why it was unusual Band 8 Sample The meal I had was very unusual, and it happened completely by accident. I was waiting for my flight at the airport when I suddenly heard someone calling my name. When I turned around, I saw my high school best friend whom I hadn't seen in almost 10 years. It was such a wonderful surprise to see him after all this time, and we quickly caught up on each other's lives. Since we had some time to kill before our flights, my friend suggested that we grab something to eat. We walked around the airport, and eventually found a small restaurant that served local cuisine. I was excited to try something new, and my friend ordered a dish that he said was a local specialty. When our food arrived, I was surprised to see that it was actually a plate of insects. There were fried crickets, grasshoppers, and beetles. I have never eaten insects before, and I was a bit hesitant at first. But my friend encouraged me to try them, saying that they were delicious and packed with protein. I finally mustered up the courage to try one, and to my surprise, it was actually quite tasty. It had a crunchy texture and a slightly nutty flavor. I ended up eating more than I thought I would, and my friend and I had a good laugh about the experience. Overall, it was an unusual meal for me, and definitely not something I would have ordered on my own. However, I'm glad that I tried it, and it's something that I will remember for a long time. It was also a great way to reconnect with my friend and make some new memories after all these years. You should say: • Where it is • What its special features are • What you and other people do in this area • And explain why you like it Answer: One of my favourite areas of countryside is called The Lake District, in Cumbria, a county in the North West of England. It’s famous for its natural beauty, and its most special features, as the name implies, are its huge lakes. These are quite unusual because they are long and relatively narrow. The rolling hills around the lakes are also incredibly beautiful, especially the way they catch the light as it is breaks through the clouds. The landscape of the Lake District was formed over millions of years, first by volcanoes and then in the Ice Age, by glaciers that moved slowly through the mountains carving deep valleys. The main pastimes in the Lake District are outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling, sailing, kayaking and so on. In fine weather, you really can’t beat a long hike in that amazing countryside as far as I’m concerned. The area is a National Park, so there are plenty of maps showing good routes. For the more adventurous, there is mountain climbing, though the mountains are not that high compared to others in the world. Those who prefer a more relaxing holiday can spend their time just sitting and admiring the stunning scenery. The weather does tend to be quite wet during autumn and winter, but that is a good excuse to rest inside the many traditional pubs or cafes, which often have open fires. One of the main reasons I love the Lake District is that is a feast for all the senses. My eyes can admire the scenery, I can listen to the birdsong, breathe and smell the fresh air, feel the cool breeze or warm sunshine, and taste the delicious local food and drink. I also like the fact that it is so remote, far away from the city where I live, so I can really get away from it all, unwind and re-charge my batteries 5. Do you think people are more selfish or self-centered now than in the past? Well, that’s a really hard question… Are people now more selfish or self centered now? I guess my answer is no, because actually we are now already living a very modern and shared world. We have been educated to be sharing and open-hearted to others. And more and more people start to be involved in volunteering activities. I think all these are giving a sign that people nowadays care about others more than what they used to do. 6. What benefits can people get if they are self-centered? What benefits can people get when they get self-centered? Um-, it doesn’t reasonable to me that people get benefits by getting self-centered? Maybe the best thing they can get from this behavior is that they get quite satisfied with what they have. Other than that, they are lonely, because no one wants to be friends with someone who is self-centered and only thinks that the world should be spinning around him.
