Louise Jackson is a volunteer in a conservation center in Kenya. Last week a local fisherman helped a turtle that was floating on the water. Its stomach was full of plastic so it couldn’t swim. Louise helped the turtle, so it was able to return to the sea. In the Pacific Ocean there is an island of floating plastic three times the size of France. Unless we do something soon many species will become extinct. The plastic passes up to the food chain. Plastic pollution isn’t the only problem for our planet. Global temperatures are rising because we burn fossil fuels and deforestation has made things worse. Extreme weather conditions are becoming more common: storms, floods, wildfires, at the same time polar ice caps are melting. Between 2008 and 2018 more than 21 million people had to leave their homes because of climate change. Louise says we must deal with the plastic problem. Otherwise, the world will change as our children grow up, with fewer resources, fewer wildlife and more danger due to extreme weather. It won’t be easy, but we won’t rest until we succeed.
