Buckingham Palace has become the Queen's official London home since 1837. Victoria was the first Queen to live there with her husband Prince Philip. The Palace was originally a big house built in 1826. It is used also for the administrative work of Britain, and it is there that the Queen receives and entertains guests invited to the Palace. The Queen has other homes too including Windsor Castle and Balmoral in Scotland. When the Queen is at home, you can see her flag flying on top of Buckingham Palace. This flag is called the Royal Standard. It must only be flown from buildings where the Queen is present. Five Guards guard the Palace. They wear red jackets and tall, furry hats called bearskins. When the first guards come to work, a ceremony called the Changing of the Guard takes place every morning. The Palace has around six hundred rooms, including fifty-two royal and guest bedrooms, seventy-eight bathrooms, ninety-two offices, a cinema and a swimming pool. It also has its own post office and police station. About four hundred people work at the Palace, including domestic servants, chefs, cleaners, plumbers, gardeners, electricians, and two people who look after the three hundred clocks. A large number of people come to the Palace each year as guests to lunches, dinners, receptions, and Royal Garden Parties. From Buckingham Palace visitors can walk through Green Park to Horse Guards Parade where you will see the soldiers on horseback.
