The invention of television transpired over a number of years with the contributions of many different inventors. Television was a combination of the two forms of mass media in the early 20th century, radio broadcasting and cinema, which successfully combined both mediums into one. The cinema industry responded by developing improvements in technology like Technicolor and 3-D in order to remain relevant despite the exploding popularity of television. Although early televisions were developed in the 1900s and were demonstrated in the 1920s and 30s, TV sets only became widely used after the conclusion of World War II. From the 1940s, televisions became increasingly popular until nearly every household in America owned at least one. Among the most notable figures in the development of television are Archibald Alan Campbell-Swinton, who devised a way to make televisions electric rather than the previously conceived mechanical form, and Philo Farnsworth. Farnsworth is generally considered to be the true inventor of television as he developed a prototype in the 1920s that would become the blueprint for TV sets for a number of years. Farnsworth's work was, in fact, directly tied to Swinton's, as his prototype relied on the use of cathode-ray tubes. New developments in television have continued since their emerging prominence in the middle of the 20th century, and now multiple devices, such as streaming services, and personal broadcasting platforms, have revolutionized it even further as a medium.
