The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 in the city of Weimar by German architect Walter Gropius and closed under Nazi pressure in 1933. The style of Bauhaus is commonly characterized as a combination of the Arts and Crafts movement with modernism, as evident in its emphasis on function. Its approach to teaching, and to the relationship between art, society, and technology, had a major impact both in Europe and in the United States. The Bauhaus was influenced by 19th and early-20th-century artistic directions such as the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as De Stijl. Bauhaus emphasized mass production, the machine aesthetic, and the use of modern technology to make works of functional art. Sullivan's famous axiom, “form follows function,” became the touchstone for many architects. This means that the purpose of a building should be the starting point for its design. Its core objective was a radical concept: to reimagine the material world to reflect the unity of all the arts. The aim of the Bauhaus school was to break down the divisions between art, craft, industrial, and applied design through collaboration, and shared learning was therefore key to the Bauhaus school. They broke away from traditional ornamentation and curvilinear, decorative forms and promoted the machine-aesthetic. their products expressed purity, simplicity and order. The characteristics of Bauhaus include the most basic and essential forms, stripped of decoration. Bauhaus followed William Morris’ idea that materials should remain undecorated so that the original character is visible. They produced prefabricated furniture to enable quick or easy assembly on site. There was emphasis on examining the formal and physical properties of materials. The elements used in a simplified form influenced by Mies van der Rohe who said “Less is More”. The use of simplified, straight lines reflect the age of the machine. The form is abstract, originating in geometric forms. The materials used in architecture was steel frame construction, glass curtain walls, reinforced concrete. The use of prefabricated units and moveable inside walls, standardised sizes of windows and doors, machine-made components, purity of form and had no ornamentation.
