Professionalism Nurse managers must set examples of professionalism, which include academic preparation, roles and function, and increasing autonomy. The ANA’s classic “Nursing’s Social Policy Statement” (ANA, 2011) provides significant ideals for all nurses, specifically autonomy, self-regulation, and accountability. Nurses are guided by a humanistic philosophy that includes the highest regard for self-determination, independence, and choice in decision making, whether for staff or for patients. The policy statement can be used by the nurse manager as a framework for a broader understanding of nursing’s connection with society and nursing’s accountability to those who receive nursing care that facilitates “health and healing” in a caring relationship. For example, a nurse manager’s professional philosophy should include the patient’s rights. Nurse managers must lead by example because they are highly influential when staff members decide to stay or leave. Finally, the nurse manager is critical to the success and quality outcomes of any healthcare unit or operation.
