California is a state in the western United States that stretches almost 1400 kilometers along the Pacific coast from the border with Mexico. The landscape ranges from bluff beaches and redwood landscapes to the Sierra Nevada mountain range and agricultural land in the California Long Valley to the Mojave Desert. California's population is growing rapidly. Since 1962 it has been the most populous U.S. state, and today it already has twice as many inhabitants as New York, which until then had been the most populous. California had a population of 37 million people as of the 2010 population census. About 12% of all U.S. residents live in California. California is home to eight of the 50 largest cities in the country. Los Angeles is the second largest city in the United States with 3.7 million residents, followed by San Diego , San Jose, San Francisco , Fresno, Long Beach, Sacramento and Oakland. On November 8, the midterm elections are due in the USA. The U.S. Congress consists of two legislative chambers, the Senate and the House of Representatives. Every two years, all members of the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate are newly elected. In both chambers of Congress, the Democrats currently hold a slim majority. In the Senate, which has a total of 100 seats, both Democrats and Republicans have 50 seats. In the event of a tie in votes, the vote of the Vice President, Democrat Kamala Harris, will decide. The midterms will now elect 35 of the 100 House members. The slim majority for Biden's Democrats could topple. In the Senate, by the way, each state provides two senators, no matter how many residents it has. It's different for the House of Representatives: the more residents, the more representatives for a state. In the midterms, all 435 representatives in the House of Representatives are newly elected. Here, too, the existing slim majority for Democrats hangs in the balance. Since California will have 52 U.S. House of Representatives seats up for election this year, with a loss of one seat, it is also a crucial state with major influence. In addition, California's gubernatorial election is also up for grabs. Incumbent Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who was elected with 61.9% of the vote in 2018, is running for re-election. His Republican opponent is Brian Dahle. Other offices up for election on November 8 include vice governor, attorney general, California secretary of state, treasurer and insurance commissioner. Important issues that are critical to the outcome of the election are gambling, the development of the economy and inflation, and poverty in society. California has a hugely powerful economy. If California were its own nation, it would be among the 10 most economically powerful countries. Although agriculture is gradually giving up its place as the most important sector of the economy to industry, California still produces large quantities of fruits and vegetables. To the north is "Silicon Valley" between Palo Alto and San Jose. The name refers to the fact that the leading manufacturers of semiconductors are located here. The region is also a focus of software development. California is still an important center for the entertainment industry (including cinema and television film production), especially in Hollywood and Burbank. Tourism is also an important source of income. Disneyland, Sea World and other theme parks attract millions of visitors each year. San Francisco with its attractions and numerous communities with entertainment facilities in the Los Angeles area also profit from tourism. One of the biggest problems for California is the huge demand for water. Advancing climate change will pose a major threat to industry and agriculture in the future, as soils and croplands will no longer be supplied with sufficient water. The effects of the Corona pandemic are also still clearly felt and have significantly slowed down the otherwise strong economic growth. In addition, high inflation is driving up the already high cost of living in California. As a result, nearly 15% of the population lives below the poverty line, which is one of the highest rates in the United States. Governor Gavin Newsom is primarily trying to fight poverty and financially strengthen the lower part of society. California voters will additionally decide the fate of seven statewide propositions on November 8, measures placed on the ballot by either politically powerful interest groups or lawmakers that will impact the lives of Californians. The following issues are included in the proposals: Abortion, Sports wagering, Arts funding at public schools, Kidney dialysis, Wealth tax for zero-emission vehicle programs, gambling and Flavored tobacco. The proposals, like all state ballot measures, require approval by a simple majority of voters for passage. Unless otherwise specified, the voter-approved proposals will take effect once the December election results are certified. It is likely that Democrats will be the stronger force in California and Newson will win the re-election as governor. This picture has emerged in the past as well, with recent elections always ending with large majorities in favor of Democrats. This is also confirmed by polls for the midterms in California. Currently, all important offices are occupied by Democratic politicians in California.
