RTP TESTING There are a variety of tools that can be used to help determine whether a player is ready to return to play following an injury to the ACL. Traditionally decisions have been based on the duration of time from injury (or surgery) or have used simple office based criteria (like the absence of an effusion). More recently clinicians have developed a range of functional tests that can help assess a player’s physical capacity. It is hoped that these may more reliably predict readiness to safely return to play and minimise the probability of re-injury. A study from the Aspetar FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence has shown that successfully completing a battery of functional tests substantially reduces the risk of re-injury.20 Players who did not meet the discharge criteria had a four times greater risk of sustaining an ACL graft rupture compared with those who met all six RTS criteria. Three of the tests used in the Aspetar RTP test battery include the single hop, triple hop and cross over hop tests.
