Nobody would have looked at a picture of Richard James White and thought that he was a dangerous murderer. In the 1990’s the 19 year old boy was only 5 foot, five inches tall and looked about 13 years old. Because of this, police have given him the nickname Babyface. However, don’t let that fool you, because he was one of the most notorious killers in New York. Shooting without remorse, and avoiding capture, some may have thought that would have gotten away with it after all. He was apprehended for his first attempted murder of a man named Kevin Smith. Richard James White's brother had been murdered and he assumed that Kevin Smith had something to do with it. Revenge overtook the young man, and he went after him with a gun. He was arrested for that incident but jumped bail before his trial avoiding ever being caught again for years. He joined the Parkside Gang which was notorious for stealing from drug dealers. The biggest issue with charging Richard was his affiliations in the gang made it so they couldn’t prove he was actually the one doing certain things. He was suspected of being one of five members that robbed an armored car for $100,000. The transit authority was killed in the process by a stray bullet. To this day nobody knows who killed him, but Jameswhite will also be a suspect. They believe he killed six more men between 1992 and 1993. The reasons for these murders are debated but all relate to more of the same. Revenge and drug disputes caused him to shoot without care and rack up bodies. The entire time avoiding New York police. The last of those 6 killings was a double killing where he was spotting sitting on the handlebars of a bike and holding a gun in each hand. Killing the two men and wounding the two others. Many more murders in the area were trying to be linked to him but with not enough evidence the number of men he actually killed will remain unknown. One childhood friend has made claims that the media overhyped these murders and in realty all of them were in related to the murder of his brother. If he was a good kid that turned bad looking for revenge or somebody that just enjoyed murdering and hurting others is one of his many mysteries. Catching the man was difficult mainly because he would flee to other cities to hide out after his murders. Packets of him and the gang were sent out to nearby states main cities and even across the border to Toronto. Police trying desperately for somebody to capture this man and bring him to justice. At that point he had killed six men and wounded another 15. All using the same weapon, a gun. A year later he was found in Georgia after another altercation got him arrested. He got into a traffic dispute with a man and fatally wounded him on the spot. The victim accidently backed into his car and a fight between the men started. Richard unloaded several shots into his torso before being caught and arrested. He was labeled as extremely dangerous as well as prone to killing at even a slight provocation. Nobody would think that this man with the face of a young boy would end up being the one that brutally killed them. He was found with two handguns and a switchblade knife on him. Unknown if he was in Georgia to start a new life, or to just change venues for his shooting sprees. If the former than it was clearly too hard for him to avoid solving his problems without murder. The passenger in his car, Devon Brown, was also arrested and linked to Richard all the way back in New York. At that point he was wanted for 15 murders, three rapes, and more shootings than anybody could imagine. Upon capture more information was found about the boy that made people question if he was truly evil, or just messed up in the mind. It turned out that the man was shipping his clothing to Jamaica. Not to hide evidence but instead to have the clothing treated with “obeah” magic. He believed that doing this would make him invisible to the police and unable to be arrested because of it. Police all the way back in New York were relieved that the man was finally caught and him rein of terror and murder would finally be coming to an end. At the trial though confusing evidence and testimony made it nearly impossible to tell if Richard or Brown were the one to actually shoot and kill the man in the car that day. After trying to get new jurors and failing to get the entire case overturned both men were sentenced to life in prison for the murder. Richard James white appealed his sentence and failed every time. He remains in jail where he is expected to spend the rest of his life. Babyface had finally been caught but we still might never know the reasons for his actions. Revenge for his brother leading down a nasty path of gangs and murder? A boy caught in a bad situation and in over his head? Or perhaps he was sick, believing his clothing would make him invisible to police looking for him. All that can be said for sure is that once he was caught on that day in 1994 he was finally stopped from killing anymore people.
