Chapter One: Laughing hysterically at jokes that they shouldn’t be, jokes containing topics that shouldn’t be laughed at, which just made it all the funnier through the guilt, was one of her favourite things to do. The person on the other end of the phone was Ruby’s best friend in the whole world. His name, was Owen. They shared the same kind of humour that others often don’t. Listened to music that others called “depressing”, such as Twenty One Pilots, My Chemical Romance etc., as well as the inspirational ones such as NF, that was her favourite. They both loved music so much, and found comfort in it, even the “depressing” ones where they found it gave them hope, and it was something to relate to, when everyone else made them feel crazy or that they were wrong for being depressed, because no one ever took the time to listen, the simple thing, that’s so easy to do. Even when they did listen, they would call it “bullshit”, or “stupid”. They didn’t deserve their own opinions, own voices. They were fine. They were happy. Nothing wrong with them. These were spoken comments about them that they heard countless times. Comments from mind-less, almost careless people. What also made them so close, was the history they had together, because it went back a while. Ruby was now 24, and Owen, the boy on the phone, was 26. They met when she was 17, he was 19, she had met him through the fact they were both outside after they were kicked out their house for the day. The poor girl was crying on the bench after having a panic attack, shaking the whole old and almost collapsing seat. The worried boy heard her from a short distance away, and went to help. Ruby was scared when she looked up and saw him approaching quickly, so he slowed down his pace and smiled, bending his knees as he walked, crouching lower to her height as to not seem so tall and intimidating. The reason being, he could see in her face that his quick approach startled her as she appeared to be very jumpy and jittery. Her body tightly pulled together, she ducked her head in, put it close to her chest as if she expecting him to strike her round the head or force an attack on her, she did so scrunching her eye’s tightly together. She waited for the pain of a smack which she felt daily, over and over again. Obviously, it didn’t come and Owen was concerned and confused, scared that he had done something wrong. After a few seconds which to her felt like years, she cautiously lifted her head and scanned the boy to look at his posture, seeing that his hands were flat on his bending knees, different from the raised position he had before, to get the bawling girls attention. He spoke softly to break the booming loud silence and said, “I’m not going to hurt you, I promise”, he said backing away and rising up slowly to his normal, standing position, Owen then raised his arms slightly to steady himself as he did so, then returned them back to their original position at the side of him. He paused for a few seconds, and they could both hear the quiet which hurt her and made her body freeze and her mind run wild like an animal, swamped with pain and anticipation. He gestured at the bench as an indication of him wanting to sit next to her and patiently waited for her response. Ruby was hesitant at first, but let him after a few seconds, after contemplating all the results of the decision to let him sit, the outcome’s that went well and the ones that went horribly wrong. The fact they could become friends, or he will straight away turn on her. Or even whether he’ll lure her in for a while, then attack her in ways she imag
