#1 In my first year of university I worked a job as a technician in the wood shop. I was deathly afraid of the 8 foot table saw because once I saw someone slice their hand on it. So I would avoid it at all costs. I would also avoid doing calculations because I hated math. One day I had to give an orientation to new students on how to use the table saw while demonstrating how to measure out and build a small stool. I was dreading it so much and planned to call in sick so I wouldn’t have to do it. Luckily last minute, the shop manager offered to do it because I was too short to reach across the table-saw from one side to the other. #2 I used to dance at a pre-professional level and I taught dance classes for children with physical disabilities called Music and Motion. They were suspended by harnesses that hung from tracks on the ceiling for extra support so they could be upright and mobile and a live pianist would play and accompany them. There was this little 3 year old girl who had never been able to walk and one day I told her to imagine being chased by monsters coming to eat her. She started crying and began walking right away. I felt really bad but it ended up being one of the most rewarding days of the job. I never ended up telling her mom how I got her to walk though. #3 In university I was a waitress at a really fancy Italian restaurant called Chin-Chin. We had some bottles of imported wine well worth over $150 a bottle. One day I had a table with someone who looked really familiar but I couldn’t remember who it was. He ordered said very expensive bottle of wine and when I went to uncork it, my hand slipped and it spilled all over his pants and shoes. And yes, it was red wine. Fast forward to a few months later, my boyfriend at the time worked on the set of Portlandia and invited me to the end of the season wrap party. Fred Armisen came up to me and said “hey it’s our wine expert! My pants are feeling thirsty, mind pouring them a glass?”
