The Islamic and Christian worldviews are instrumental in providing a way for adherents to gain peace. In Christianity, this is informed by the New Testament and expressed by nurturing one’s relationship with God through acts of discipleship in hope of achieving salvation. In Islam, the teachings of the Quran and Hadith guide adherents to submit to Allah to achieve the goal of Akhira (afterlife). Pax Christi (POC) and Love Thy Neighbour (LTN) are Christian teachings of peace which guide adherents to strive for peace as they demonstrate discipleship. Jihad is an Islamic teaching of peace which guide adherents to strive for submission to the will of Allah. Through a relationship with God in the Christian worldview, adherents can build a bond with Jesus (the prince of peace) through which they are bestowed the gift of Pax Christi (peace of Christ). Pax Christi is instrumental in guiding adherents as it demonstrates that peace can only be attained by Christ and through notions of discipleship. Inspired by this notion, adherents strive to sanctify and improve their bond with Christ by living out gospel values and mirroring His actions regarding peace, evident in “love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34). Through actively seeking to establish peace by living out Jesus’ word, being active disciples of God is liberating for people, offering them strong meaning and purpose that grants them a sense of inner peace. Adherents are also called therefore to create purposeful relationship with others that inspires communal initiatives as seen through the contributions of Sister Mary. In January 2017, Sister Mary was honoured the Order of Australia medal for her prison chaplaincy service for 20 years. This demonstrates her contribution to inner peace as she practiced notions of discipleship, positively impacting the lives of many as she continues to strive for Pax Christi. Through this sense of inner peace and exercising Jesus’ messages of peace and being a disciple of God, adherents will focus on right relationships with others and treating everyone with care and compassion, creating outer peace. This is exemplified through “Hope Amidst the Violence” 2019, who aim to reduce violence and conflict within society by partnering with schools and running community organisations to address those affected by violence. Workers embody Pax Christi given to adherents as “peace I leave you, my peace I give you” John 14:28. By aiming to reduce youth violence in Brixton and avoiding conflict leading to discipleship, the community can attain a sense of outer peace, guiding adherents to an understanding of Pax Christi. “Love Thy Neighbour” is another Christian teaching with promotes the pursuance of peace, seeking reconciliation where possible. As seen in “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9) influences adherents to work towards peace as God will have appointed them as blessed in the kingdom of Heaven, therefore Christians should keep good relationships with orders to be right with God. “Love Thy Neighbour” is an embodiment of inner peace, as it describes Jesus’ regularity to commune with humanity by extolling messages of non-violence, hence adherents are practicing discipleship through caring for one another and exemplifying harmonious relationships with society. This is evident through the acts of Leila and Danny Abdillah, the Australian Maronite parents who lost their children and niece in a tragic car accident in 2020. In “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?” (James 4:13), the absence of inner peace is destructing, hence through Love Thy Neighbour, they have been able to forgive the driver of the incident and act as role models for adherents by spreading peace throughout the community. Consequently, they have achieved inner and outer peace through following the example of Christ and advocating against injustice in their daily lives. By practicing such notions of discipleship, the Abdillah’s individual and communal peace is an embodiment to the teaching of “Love Thy Neighbour” For Muslims, submission to Allah manifests the house of Peace, granted by Allah for completing submission to his will (Tawhid). Through the principal teaching of Jihad, adherents are offered an attainable path to both inner and outer peace. Jihad is the teaching that one must fight the inner struggle to selfishness and overcoming temptations to fully submit to Allahs will. By doing so, adherents are enlightened and peaceful, as “The Muslim is the one whom others are sure no harm will come from his hands and words.” (Hadith), hence Muslims cannot condone violence or hatred to anyone, as it doesn’t’ guide adherents to peace and is not favoured in submission to Allah. These struggles of violence and hatred can be overcome by complying with Sharia Law (path to water) symbolically it offers peace and clarity for the adherent. By complying with sharia law, adherents understand that they are overcoming their Jihad, granting them a profound sense of inner peace. By doing so, adherents are encouraged to go through life with patience and trust Allah as they strive closer to submit to his will. Through Jihad, the Ummah (community) becomes a nation of holy struggle, and this calls Muslims to put their prejudice aside, evidenced within “Humanity is but a single brotherhood” (Quran 49:10). The Council on American Islamic-Relations (CAIR) contributes to outer peace through achieving their objective in establishing harmony amongst the Muslim community and the world. CAIR released a statement condemning the brutal Invasion on Ukrainian soil from Russia, calling for an end to this fastly approaching war. This statement affirms their stance against violence, showing their pursuance of outer peace in support of Muslim communities across the world. Furthermore, Jannan Ezat, a mother of a victim of the Christchurch shootings said in court “I have decided to forgive you”. By doing so, she was able to overcome her greater Jihad and submit to Allah peacefully which advocates for world peace by influencing other victims families to forgive the killer of her son. Hence, these initiatives link to an understanding of Jihad, as by attaining inner and outer peace adherents can exert harmony and achieve submission to the will of Allah. Both Christianity and Islam seek to understand peace as expressed through their sacred texts. While there may be different texts and messages between Christianity and Islam, there are significant commonalities. Both Islam and Christianity seek to develop the inner knowledge of God and learn by his example of peace, ultimately brining about peace in the world.
