Turkey has a new bridge and its big - We mean really big. World's largest suspension brige. Spanning 4.6 kilometres across the dardnelles strait. if you put it in london. it would dominate the skyline and rise higher than the shard, the tallest building in western europe. This remarkable feet of engineering quite literally connects europe to asia and crosses one of the most important and busiest trade routes in the world. the 2.8 billion megaproject had to withstand earthquakes, storms and loads. because of the size of some shipsusing the straits, engineers opted for a suspension bridge design. suspension bridge technology is more expensive than cable stayed bridge. two enermous 318-metre gigh towers were planted. on either end of the straits, supporting the 2 kilometres main span between them, the longest of its kind in the world. A pair of 59000 tones caissons were submerged. some 40 metres below the surface, one on the european side and one on the asian side of water. They would act as the tower water proof foundation. Addition steel platforms were then attatched, so that tower could be mounted above sea level. The main concerns are aerodynamic stability, earthquakes, ship impact loads and traffic loads.once the tower were finished, the cables between them were then string strand by a strand in a process took more than 162000 kilometres worth of wire. Thats enough to loop around the globe 4 times. The main duck was then suspended from the cables with incredible 72 metres clear of water. For preventing large annual storms, deck was built with a twin box grid structure with a nine metre gap in between that. Helps winds to pass easily and improves stability. This bridge helped the to reduce the journey from 5 hours to 6 minutes.
