The Empty Can Test is used to assess the supraspinatus muscle and supraspinatus tendon. This test is performed by assessing the deltoid with the arm at 90 degrees of abduction and neutral rotation. The shoulder is then internally rotated and angled forward 30 degrees: the thumb should be pointing towards the floor. Next, we will perform the muscle testing by applying resistance. When the patient experience pain or there is a demonstration of weakness in this position, the result is POSITIVE.
