Imagine a woman… From a rural area… Away from hometown… Being in an abusive relationship… Was kicked out in a cold night… with a 5 days old baby! no money! no place to go! not knowing her rights! THAT WAS ME… Half of Uzbekistan is rural and many women have abusive marriages… Only this month 7 women were murdered by husbands and authorities kept silent. This situation leads even to suicidal thoughts. What if women in rural areas have an online platform where they can easily understand their legal rights to protect themselves? Team Uzbekistan wants to empower these women through an online platform DUGONALAR which means Sisterhood. Our solution is to guide them for legal rights using simple animated videos, provide emotional support, and connect them with each other. In Phase 1, in collaboration with lawyers from NGO Madad we will create animated materials. We already have started working on our website and negotiated with animators. In phase 2, we’ll build a safe sisterhood networking, for emotional support from women with real stories. In phase 3, we are going to provide contacts of existing resources, like shelters and psychologists. In phase 4, we will guide women how to achieve financial independence. Next two years, we will collect more accurate data on domestic violence. Uzbekistan has a goal to dramatically reduce all forms of violence and related death rates by 2030. Under this campaign, we will collaborate with public bodies and NGOs. Our solution is practical and does not require significant funding beyond of initial investments. Yuliya is a project manager who is responsible for launching of the platform. Lilya, our software engineer, has already started to build a website and mobile app. As a partnership manager next week I will demonstrate our project to the World Bank’s experts in Washington D.C. and get further support. Zarnigor is a focal point for a pilot project in her rural area Guzar. We advocate for ending violence, raise awareness of its causes and consequences. WE SUPPORT EACH OTHER!
