I opened the door at around 1 a.m. to carefully listen to the sound coming from the stairs. It sounded like a whispering monologue, but it was very loud. Apart from the light from my apartment, it was completely dark. I yelled, “Who’s there!?” The whispering came to an abrupt halt. I waited a moment before taking my torch and slowly walking over to see if anyone was there. My footsteps echoed in the stairwells no matter how quietly or slowly I walked. I walked down about twelve or fourteen steps and saw no one. I called out again: “Is anyone there?” Again, complete silence. Then I decided to return to my apartment and try to sleep. I moved into this apartment a week ago, and the stairwell lights have not been working since then. I’m hoping they fix them soon. I’ve been hearing the same loud whispering sound every night for the past week. It got on my nerves tonight, and I couldn’t stop myself from checking. This is a strange building I live in. I haven’t yet seen any of my neighbors. I have the impression that either they are extremely asocial and weird, or that I am the sole occupant of this entire four-story building. I returned to my bedroom. The balcony door was open because there was a cool breeze outside and I prefer sleeping in a cold room. I went to bed after turning off the lights. It took me half an hour of tossing and turning before I found the right position to fall asleep. it was in that stage between being asleep and being awake, when that creepy annoying whispering sound started up again. I jumped out of bed, enraged but also terrified, and grabbed the hammer from my toolbox. I took a firm step towards the door, intending to chase away whoever was standing and making noise at the stairwell. The whispering was louder this time, so I put my ear to the door to listen. It sounded like it was coming from behind the door. I thought to myself, “Either it’s a prank on me to scare me, or it’s someone who is mentally unstable.” In any case, this had to stop right away. I suddenly opened the door with the hammer in my hand. There was no one around, and the sound abruptly stopped. I shut the door and thought that I should contact my landlord first thing in the morning. Someone who lives in the same building must be an idiot. I decided to ignore the annoying sounds if they recurred and try to get some sleep. I crawled back into my bed. I tucked my head between the pillows, trying to think of anything that might help me sleep. After a while, I must have fallen into a deep sleep. I began to dream of the same whispering sound, but this time it was very loud, as if it were coming from a very close distance. I realized I wasn’t hearing this in a dream, but rather in my own bedroom, where the whispering monologue is taking place. I became extremely afraid and began sweating. I didn’t want to open my eyes, but something jumped on me and a heavy weight was placed on my chest. I was choking and having difficulty breathing. I opened my eyes when I couldn’t take it any longer. Right on top of me was the ugliest and most horrifying face I’d ever seen. I was paralyzed and couldn’t move a single limb. It looked me in the eyes and said, “I came for you… to take your soul to the world of shadows…”
