Chapter 3 Whatever will be, will be! Que sera sera! I can't come here and kill myself, she grumbled to herself while holding the baby's food in one hand and mopping up the spill with another. She had just started maternity leave when she hit rock bottom. Too much burden for a mother of three. But before long, she darted into the living room again, grabbed her laptop, and finally pressed send on an email that said what needed to be said - which is what made her feel so relieved afterward. It took several months but she eventually found the courage to do it after all. She felt a surge of relief at that moment, but she wasn't sure what would happen, what her boss would say, or how the company would react. Bruwaa had quit her job. Hours later, her boss called to ask about her reasons for quitting such a lucrative position and promised her a significant salary increase and whatever benefits she could think of. But Bruwaa refused the offer outright. This time she’s not going back. She knew that this time she would be gone for good. Bruwaa has been a strong force in the company for twelve years and she knows that it won't be easy to replace her skillset and leadership skills. But Bruwaa is ready for the next chapter in her life and is excited to see what opportunities are out there for her. A day passed, and she called. I appreciate the heads up, I said when she called to inform me of her decision. I could tell that this was not an easy decision for her and I wanted to show her that I cared about her business growth by giving her the needed support. Now it’s time for her to fully focus on her side hustle, her clothing business. She has been in the business for years and has a loyal customer base that she plans to take advantage of now that she has more free time. Though she will have to balance her side hustle with her family life, she is confident that she will be able to make it work because of the skills and experience she has gained over the years. It was great to reconnect with Bruwaa and hear more about her business goals and aspirations for the future to grow it into a reputable brand in the industry. After reviewing her business to date, we determined that it would be most effective to concentrate on three key areas: carving a niche in the clothing market, developing a marketing plan, and establishing a brand guide. Our goal is to help Bruwaa grow her business and reach her full potential by refining these three aspects of her business. Chapter 4 Take Charge! It’s been a few months now since she left and she hasn’t looked back since. She knew that this time she would be gone for good and she was ready for the change. There were a lot of factors that led up to her decision to leave in the first place, but she felt like this was what she needed to do for herself and the family. She had spent so many years of her life waiting around and not taking a dive into her passions to live life on her own terms. But this is the point in her life where she realized that it was more important for her to take action and live her dreams. And she did! During the following weeks when the business audit was done, she realized that she was leaving a lot on the table. Her shop attendant had been stealing some of the sales money because there was no proper tracking system. With a system in place, she would be able to keep track of what was going on in her store and make sure that employees were not taking any more of her hard-earned money! It is not uncommon for a business to find itself in a tight financial spot and need to make some tough decisions. In many cases, this can include dismissing employees and taking on their duties as well as firing the shopkeepers and assuming complete control of the sales and management of the shop. Bruwaa always knew she had a knack for sales and the ability to successfully manage her own business. In order to prove this to herself, she fired the current shopkeeper and took charge of the sales and management of the store herself. Additionally, she installed a POS system, and CCTV cameras to monitor the premises and hired a part-time accountant to properly audit her accounts. Sales doubled within a week of Bruwaa taking over and she realized that she was more than capable of handling her own business. Running a small business can be daunting if you don't have the skill set required and no proper structure to ensure the scalability of the business you will fail. There are many factors that play into this, such as your knowledge of the industry, your access to funding, and even your own personal skill set. That is why it is important to start with something that is manageable and not too expensive so that when it becomes successful, it can be scaled up quickly. It may also be prudent to either learn new skills or delegate all technical aspects to a specialist so that you can focus on the big picture and long-term vision for your venture.
