The whole hall echoes with cheers as soon as the head professor announced the trip's dates. It has been over a month for the students who were waiting for the trip announcement, and finally, the trip was decided for the next week. Mary celebrates her last exam with friends and tells them that she had already packed for the trip a month ago. Her eyes spot Jackson who walks into the cafeteria, swinging his bag over his shoulder. She can never avoid him, whether he is in class or on the football court. Mary likes him a lot, but her ego doesn't allow her to ask him out first. Every day, she waits for him to ask her out because deep down she knows that he likes her. Who wouldn't like her? After all, she was one of a kind and a clever girl, as she used to think. Mary excuses herself from her friends and walks towards the canteen's counter where Jackson is standing, admiring the menu. "The banana shake is really good," Mary stands close to him, pointing to the shake on the menu. She smiles effortlessly, though Jackson doesn't even look at her. He hands the menu back to the man across the counter. "I would like to have coffee," Mary's smile disappears as she was offended enough. But still, she waits with him while his coffee was being made. "Are you going on the trip?" she asks him and he just stays quiet. Mary kept on staring at him, so he finally speaks up avoiding the awkwardness. "I don't know. I don't really like mountains and forests." Mary hits him on his arm in a friendly way and laughs. "Come on, it would be fun. We just have a year left in our college anyways. We would make memories." Jackson still looks unsure, but Mary convinces him a lot. If he didn't go, her mood would be worse as she bought all her clothes to show them off to him. She was only eager to go because Jackson would be going along too. His coffee finally arrives and Jackson grabs it and makes it out of the cafeteria, visibly irritated by her. Mary still can't believe how she is always running behind him and he doesn't even bother talking to her. Suddenly, a voice alerts her. "Are you going, Mary?" She turns to find Ethan smiling at her. Mary rolls her eyes off and walks back to the table where her friends were sitting. Ethan sadly turns towards the counter and places his order. He turns back to look at her, while waiting for his order and realizes that he could never have her. Her standards are too high and why would the school's coolest girl fall for a nerd like him? "He is looking at you," one of Mary's friends points out, looking at Ethan. “So what?” Mary blurts, ignoring them. "He is so head over heels for you. I wish you didn't waste all your energy on Jackson, who doesn't even look at you." Mary jerks her head towards her friend and passes her a dead glare. Though she hated her statement, nevertheless it was true. If she had given the same energy to Ethan, it would have proved something. Days follow by and finally, the students gather around the school's parking to head into the buses. The journey was nine-hour long, thus everyone was eager to see the mountains. The area they were visiting was a deserted one, and not many tourists visited it. Mary wonders how they could skip such a beautiful site. The students start to sit on their sides, but all Mary is looking for is Jackson. He isn't in sight anywhere. She kept on walking to the end of the queue to keep waiting for him, but finally as she was the last student to board and she didn't see Jackson. Sadly, she enters the bus and the only seat empty was beside Ethan. Eventually, her mood got even worse. She ordered one of the girls sitting in the start to go and sit with Ethan. Luckily, she was a junior therefore, stood quietly and sat beside Ethan. The teacher counted the students lastly and closed the door of the bus. The driver started the engine and when the bus was about to go, the door knocks abruptly. It was Jackson. Mary's features bright up instantly and she stands herself to open the door for him. She now pokes the girl sitting beside her and she goes to sit on the other bus, though her friends were there. Nobody liked to argue with Mary. Jackson instantly takes the seat and so does Mary. After a long night's journey, they finally reach their destination. Jackson has been sleeping most of the time and Mary hated him for that. He wakes up when the light rays strike his face. The students get off and stretch themselves to let go of the tiredness. The sight was beautiful. There were huge mountains around and the temperature was quite cold. Mary, instead of wearing her jacket, squeezes in Jackson's embrace, but he excuses himself and goes around. After some time of their arrival, their bags were distributed and it was time for hiking. They were supposed to camp a bit higher on the mountain. All of the students made their way up towards the camping spot. Mary didn't find it too pleasant. Firstly, the temperature was too cold, and the track was rough. Finally, after hiking for an hour, they reach the fine, level land on the mountain, surrounded by heavy forest. All of the girls sit on the corner, while the teachers and boys built the camps. As soon as the camps were set, everyone got inside. The teachers instructed them to rest that day, and that they would start exploring tomorrow. They all ate food and enjoyed the bonfire. After that, they all rushed inside, including Mary who wasn't thinking about Jackson anymore, as the cold was eating her up. The night went calm, as everyone was too tired and slept peacefully. The next day, Mary was awakened by one of her friends. "Wake up, wake up" she almost shouted at her. Mary woke up, trembling. "Did you hear?" she asked. "I was sleeping!" Mary shouts at her, rubbing her hands against her eyes. "Two boys disappeared last night." Mary suddenly becomes alert and saw her friend in horror. "What? Who? Is Jackson fine?" Mary's friend snorts and informs her that they were their juniors. Mary sighs in relief but still couldn't understand it. "Maybe they went to the toilet." Mary shared her opinion and her friend slapped her on her arm. "They checked it of course."
