Hi, I`m Albert from Kosovo. I used to be a usual citizen of Prishtina, but turned into climate activist in my country. I am deeply interested in urban areas being affected by the unsustainable city development and military conflicts. You will not either see my face or hear my real voice. It`s a story from the activist who simply wants to be heart. The military operations conducted during the 1999 Kosovo crisis caused serious damage to the country’s natural environment. The damage extended to several other countries of south-east Europe. The conflict began on 24 March 1999 and went on for 78 days. The military aircraft flew over 34,000 missions, carrying out around 2,300 strikes. The total amount of ordnance is put at between 22,000 and 79,000 tonnes. 78 industrial sites and 42 energy installations were destroyed or damaged by bombs or missiles. Can`t imagine what it cause to the nature in Kosovo. The bombing subjected ecosystems, surface water, groundwater, soil and air in the Balkans to unprecedented contamination involving over 100 toxic substances. The environmental impact in the Balkans of the Kosovo crisis breaks down into: direct and indirect damage; the effects of destruction of infrastructure and industrial installations; damage to the natural heritage; consequences of population displacement. As a result of destruction and fires at industrial facilities, there was severe contamination of air, water and soils by hazardous substances, including dioxins, toxic sulfur and nitrogen compounds in low degrees of oxidation. The contamination was registered in the neighboring countries as well. One of the crimes is city destroying. In Kosovo, military forces systematically emptied and destroyed many towns and villages. The damage to living quarters, infrastructure, clean drinking water supply and waste systems was obvious. Thus some regions can`t be restored within the emptiness. Although it has been 23 years since active hostilities took place, Kosovo is still recovering from all the negative effects caused by the war. What should I say for the conclusion? Be wise. Be wise enough to prevent the eco crisis. Or learn how wisely to prevent it. Because the restoration process needs lots of time and money. Wars aren't only about people. They are about nature itself.
