We open the scene to a graph showing a downward trend of views. A young girl sits behind her computer screen seemingly hopeless to the diminishing following and income that she was once able to sustain herself on. In the midst of her wallowing in self-pity a new email notification lights up her computer. The email contained a message directly from a small company offering her a sponsorship with a bit of pay and a starting booster pack to the gacha game they just put out. Their only condition for her was to stream the game to her followers as a form of advertising for them. Realizing this could be the push her dried up channel was needing, she emailed them back right away to accept the offer. When the game’s open beta started she was the first to stream it. With the booster pack they gave her, she was able to keep a steady stream of content through the first few days of the release. Her views and followers were on their way up as the new gacha was soaring in popularity on online forums and social media. The company’s account put out regular updates with new characters and lootboxes for players to buy, even with the game in its early stages. The streamer, and the people into the game didn’t seem to care that there wasn’t a fleshed out game yet because they couldn’t wait to use all the characters they bought in the near future. Everyone loved the characters and character skins you could pull from the lootboxes and it became almost a competition online to see who got the luckiest pulls, meaning more money for the company. The girl found herself addicted to the thrill of getting the randomized items. To keep up with the people on social media she found herself buying more and more lootbox packages to keep her streams interesting and fresh, but was no longer profiting off the situation because of it. After many company posts claiming that development was in the works, people became wary of when exactly these promises would be fulfilled. The only things theyve put out have been purchasable items with no real ‘game’ to use them in. Because of this, when the girl went to check her channel stats she saw her views taking a dive again. Although she started to feel troubled by her frivolous spending for a game she hasn’t even gotten to play yet, she reassured her watchers that games take time and to try to be patient in spite of things. She went to sleep hoping the backlash towards her and the game would wind down tomorrow. Waking up, she opened her phone and read through some confusing posts about the game being gone. Half asleep, she made her way to their page just to see that it was now deleted. A horrible feeling washed over her as she realize the game application was completely wiped from her computer as well. All she could do is sit in shock as her notifications blew up with messages from outraged players. Everyone got duped by the fraudulent company’s empty promise of a game they put too much faith in, and no amount of anger at the streamer was going to get anyone’s money back.
