MASENO UNIVERSITY LIBRARY ONLINE USER TUTORIAL/GUIDE VIDEO INTRODUCTION The purpose of this Video Tutorial is to help information seekers to navigate the Internet and World Wide Web in order to locate and retrieve relevant online information. Both the Internet and World Wide Web are gateways to important online information sources, such as Digital Libraries, Digital Repositories and Web Resources. Basically, there are two modes of access to online information sources: Open Access (information is available for free) and Subscriptions (information is accessible at a fee). ACCESS TO ONLINE INFORMATION SOURCES In the Web, information resources can be stored in various forms like databases, digital items and Web resources among, others. However, some of the sources can be accessed directly by double-clicking on a relevant link to the resources. While others may require that the users first register with relevant websites that host the information resources, and then login to get to the information resources. For the practical purpose of this presentation, we are going to look at two pathways that provide access to electronic information resources, both on-campus and off-campus (remote access): 1. Maseno University’s Website Library Page 2. Maseno University Library Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) Follow the step-by-step procedures given below to search, locate and retrieve the wide range of electronic information resources: 1. Navigate to University’s Website 2. Select and double-click link button Library to open Library Home Page. 3. Select and double-click E-resources from the menu on top left of the Library Home Page. 4. Find and double-click Electronic Databases link to open a new page with listing of various electronic databases. 5. Browse through the page to and select the databases of interest 6. Double-click on any of the links given to connect to the publisher’s Website e.g. (Ebrary). 7. Use the search facilities provided on websites to search information material of interest e.g. e- journals, e-journal articles, eBooks etc. 1. Navigate to Maseno University Library Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), or enter the following IP Address on the browsers’ address bar: 41.89.192.30 and then click the >>Enter Button. The landing page displays listings of links to various websites hosting online databases that provide remote access a wide range of educations resources. 2. Browse through the landing page to select and double-click links to your databases of interest under the provided headings e.g. Subscribed E-Databases, Open Access Databases, and Scholarly Search Engines etc. 3. Say you want to search JSTOR or BioOne Online Journals websites which are listed on the landing page OPAC, under the Subscribed E-Databases. 4. New window will open in a login or register/sign up page. a. Existing user: login with your username/email and password, b. New user: register first, provide personal details and an activation with be forwarded to your email. c. Login by providing the username/email and password used while registering to the publisher’s Website. 5. . You can also access some Open Access Databases:-Z-Library, Internet Archive, and PDFDrive.com. You be asked to register or create your account to access the resources. a. Use search facilities provided on the Websites to search information material of interest e.g. e- journals, e-journal articles, eBooks etc. b. Review the search results on the search window to locate, retrieve and view/download information material of interest. 1. Vary the search strategy to focus your searches e.g. by using search operators—AND, Or, NOT. a. AND retrieves results that include all the search terms, b. OR retrieves results that include at least one of the search terms, c. NOT excludes the retrieval of terms from your search. 2. Use different search fields such as: a. Author b. Journal Title c. Subject or Topic 3. Searching by author a. Enter the author’s last name and initials without punctuation in the search box, and click Search. b. If you only know the author’s last name, use the author search field tag [au], e.g., Brody [au]. 4. Searching by journal Enter one of the following in the search box: a. Full journal title (e.g., molecular biology of the cell) b. Title abbreviation (e.g., mol biol cell) c. ISSN number, a standardized international code (e.g., 1059-1524) 5. Searching by Subject Subjects use a specialized search strategy involving subject filters that restrict retrieval to specific subjects e.g. AIDS, Cancer, Systematic Reviews, etc. 6. Documents must be downloaded in relevant formats for immediate use by readers. 7. Also you should install appropriate reader or viewer applications for all document formats such as portable document format (pdf).
