The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana is a scheme launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals with the objective of making quality generic medicines available at affordable prices. The scheme was launched on September 23, 2014, and aims at providing better access to quality drugs and healthcare services than ever before. The ‘Jan Aushadhi Scheme’ was launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilisers in 2008. The scheme was revamped in 2015 as ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana’ (PMJAY). The scheme was renamed ‘Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana’ (PMBJP) in 2016. As of August 2022, a total of 8799 PMBJP Kendras have been opened across the country. The key objectives of PMBJP are to - Provide high-quality medicines at an affordable price to all. - Promote the availability of quality health services for everyone. - Deliver safe and effective medical treatments for women's menstrual health. - And to generate employment opportunities by encouraging local entrepreneurs to open the PMBJP outlets. The Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) oversees the Jan Aushadhi campaign, which aims to promote affordable drugs among consumers. There are five stakeholders: vendors/suppliers/manufacturers, accredited NABL-empaneled labs, distributors, PMBJK operators, and consumers. It is managed by an independent organization set up by the pharma PSUs. The Governing Council, led by the Secretary of Pharmaceuticals, is the highest policy-making body, assisted by the Executive Council, headed by the Jt. Secretary of the Dept. of Pharmaceuticals. The Governing Council which is the Apex policy-making body comprises 10 members. The Executive Council that is Executive Decision-making body under the GC has 9 members PMBJP has five stakeholders, namely vendors/suppliers/manufacturers, accredited NABL empaneled labs, distributors, PMBJK operators, and consumers. The PMBJP program has been granted an extension by the SFC. 10,500 PMBJP Kendras will be established across the country by March 2025. Jan Aushadhi Diwas will be observed on the 7th of March each year. To motivate stakeholders, the 2019 awards will be given in various categories. The incentive amount will be raised from Rs. 2.50 lakh to Rs. 5.00 lakh, with a cap of Rs. 15,000 per month starting from April 2021. Moreover, PMBJP Kendras may receive a one-time grant for special categories. From April 2021, the incentive for PMBJP Kendra owners has been increased from Rs. 2.5 million to up to Rs. 5 million, provided at 15% of monthly purchases made, subject to a ceiling of Rs. 15,000, with effect from April 2021. For the year 2017-18, a one-time special incentive of up to Rs. 2 lakh has been earmarked for the PMBJP Kendras, located in Aspirational Districts, North-Eastern States, Himalayan Region, Island Territories. The Divyangjan, SCs, and STs are also eligible. PMBJP has a presence in all 29 States and 9 Union Territories of India. We currently have 8799 PMBJKs. By 2024-25, the number is expected to increase up to 10,500. The product line consisting of medicines and surgical equipments is expected to surge to 2300 by 2024-25. We currently have warehouses in all of the country's major areas, and we expect a major rise in their expansion. We expect a big boost in the annual sales. The sales of Rs. 625 crores in the current year, is expected to increase to Rs. 1200 crore. in 2024-25. As of August 31, 2022, there are 8799 PMBJKs across the country. The top five States/UTs in terms of the number of PMBJKs opened are Uttar Pradesh (1189), Karnataka (994), Kerala (991), Tamil Nadu (842), and Maharashtra (638), respectively. The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras are growing rapidly. For example, 3306 PMBJKs in 2017-18, now increased to 8799 by August 31, 2022. In the year 2021-2022, PMBJP has targeted to achieve a sales turnover of Rs. 893.56 crore from an estimated 625 crore PMBJP has helped in savings of over 4,000 crore for citizens in the financial year 2020-21; 5,300 crore in 2021-22 and 2,763 crore by August 31, 2022. The program has created significant self-employment. On average, sales per store per month have increased to 1.5 million. The scheme basket consists of 1616 medicines, 250 surgical supplies & medical devices, and 23 major therapeutic groups. Jan Aushadhi medicines are available to citizens at a huge discount. Jan Aushadhi medicines are highly effective in providing affordable treatment for all major ailments. Furthermore, specialized drugs for conditions like cancer, have also been included in its comprehensive range of medicines. To fight against covid-19, PMBJP introduced immune boosting kits such as Ayu Raksha and Bal Raksha. Janaushadhi has launched 'Suvidha' sanitary napkins for sale at Rs. 1 per pad. These napkins are environmentally-friendly and oxo-biodegradable. Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras have sold 28.65 million pads, since 27th August 2019. PMBJP has increased its product basket to include 1616 medicines and 250 surgical items. In 2018, the organization implemented an SAP-based inventory management system and blacklisted poor-performing vendors. PMBJP's Jan Aushadhi initiative is a quality-assured scheme to provide people with affordable medicines, especially life-saving drugs. The medicines are sourced from WHO-GMP, FSSAI, and CE-certified suppliers and are tested at NABL-accredited laboratories. With PMBI, quality testing is being performed both at the source level and at approved national laboratories that are NABL certified and empaneled. PMBJP has collaborated with prominent manufacturers to assure quality medicines. For example, ITC Labs, BP Labs, and many others are among them. Partnering with world-class laboratories guarantees the quality of medicines. The PMBJP has established an end-to-end supply chain system with a point-of-sale (POS) application for value-added services. The logistics system is being strengthened. At present, four modern warehouses at Gurugram, Guwahati, Chennai, and Surat are functional. Further, 39 distributors have been appointed across the country to support the supply of medicines to remote and rural areas. We have coverage throughout the country in the North, South, East, and West regions. We have a central warehouse in Gurugram and three regional warehouses, one in Chennai, Gujarat, and Surat. Our distributors cover the entire country. We make deliveries faster and more reliable. Jan Aushadhi Sugam Mobile application provides the ability to search for Jan Aushadhi generic medicines, locate nearby Jan Aushadhi Kendras using Google maps, and compare the pricing of Generic vs. Branded Medicines in terms of MRP and Overall Savings, etc. People in the Northeastern states can also get benefitted from Jan Aushadhi's presence, where people can get medicines at a low cost.
