It was the years of the Second World War when Naples rebelled against the occupation of the Nazi armies of the Wehrmacht. The city was at the end of its strength with looting, round-ups and killings of civilians. The first insurrection against the enemy took place in the Vomero district on September 27, 1943 when, after yet another form of violence by the Nazis, the Neapolitans decided to react. So a group of citizens attacked a German armored vehicle and the marshal who was driving it was killed. The reaction of the Nazis was inevitably very violent. Those that followed were days of insurrections: the Neapolitan citizens fought with honor against the occupying forces. Workers, traders, students and intellectuals moved by the common thirst for freedom faced the clashes with extreme courage, despite unequal weapons. Many of them were protagonists of heroic gestures and became war martyrs. Those were days of harsh clashes, bloodshed and victims, but after four days, on the 30th of September 1943 Naples freed itself autonomously from the occupying armies. On the 1st of October of that same year the allied forces entered the city: the war for Naples was over. So Quattro Giornate square takes its name from those days of rebellion, which must never be forgotten.
