Salvo D’Acquisto was born on October 15, 1920 in via San Gennaro in Antignano, in the heart of the Vomero district. After a short but brilliant military career, he became Deputy Brigadier of the Carabinieri at the age of only 22 years old and was assigned to the Torrimpietra station, near Rome. It was the time of the end of the Second World War and a German SS unit had taken office in that area, precisely in Torre di Palidoro. On the 22nd of September 1943 there was an event that determined the terrible fate of Salvo D’Acquisto, but would destine him to be remembered to this day. A group of German soldiers accidentally caused a hand grenade to explode while they rummaged in an abandoned crate, some were injured and one of them lost his life. It was probably an accident, but the Nazis interpreted it as an attack by the partisans. On September the 23rd 1943, in retaliation, they captured 22 civilians who were forced to autonomously dig a mass grave. Salvo D’Acquisto, aware of the risks that loomed over the hostages, he tried in vain to convince the Nazis that what happened was only an accident but, failing to do so, he declared himself solely responsible for the event, asking for the release of the hostages. These were then freed and Salvo D’Acquisto shot in their place, saving the lives of innocent civilians. Salvo D 'Acquisto was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor in his memory. "A shining example of altruism, up to the point of the supreme renunciation of life".
