Welcome to the church of Pentecost audio devotional. It’s the Tuesday, September 27, 2022 edition. Topic: MAINTAINING A HEALTHY WEIGHT. Scripture References: First Corinthians chapter 6 verse 19 to 20, First Corinthians chapter 10 verse 31. Exposition: Healthy weight is a body mass index that falls between 18.5 and 24.9 among humans. However, overweight is BMI between 25.0 and 29.9 and obesity is classified as BMI beyond 30.0 and higher. Obesity is common among adults and adolescents with 40% and 20% respectively in the United States and majority are overweight and among others. ‘Healthy People 2030’, centres on assisting people to consume healthy meals and get enough physical activity to attain and maintain a healthy weight. Obesity is associated with many serious health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer. Some ethnic groups are at risk of obesity, which increases their likelihood of chronic diseases, anaesthetic and surgical difficulties with poor wound healing. Some people fail to eat a healthy diet comprising of fruits, vegetables and whole grains which have the potential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and enhance one’s health. Foods high in saturated fat and added sugars are examples of unhealthy diets and at increased risk for obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems. Also living a sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise can cause abnormal weight gain. Eating while watching television as well as stigma and discrimination of obesity may worsen the weight of the individual with grievous health challenges. The most effective way in managing obesity or overweight are changes in diet to consume healthy meals and engaging in regular physical exercise. First Corinthians chapter 6 verse 19 to 20 reveals “that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, bought with a price for which we ought to honour God with our bodies’’. Paul again in First Corinthians 10 verse 31 said “whatever we eat, drink or do must glorify God”. Prayer Guide: Oh Lord, help me to remember to keep a good weight honouring to God.
