When it comes it's so-so...disappointing Disappointment of something unattainable, something bigger than oneself that is impossible to achieve. This translates to Winston’s pessimist view of his attempts of rebellion. Big Brother is something so gigantic and systematical that it is just a shadow of failure. This is the main theme in the song: Disappointment. The title makes it pretty obvious “Let Down”. Also, other lyrics such as: the emptiest of feeling, disappointed people, clinging onto bottles Don’t get sentimental, it always ends up drivel Add up to this idea in the way the proles turn to alcohol for avoiding their problems and renouncing to freedom. The proles are the disappointed people. Also, the “Don’t get sentimental” line alludes to the only way Winston and Julia think they can defeat the party, with undifferentiated feeling and desire. But the song is a lot more cynic and mentions that this attempt will end in drivel, meaning, lies. Lies that the party will tell changing history. One of Winston great obsessions, the party’s lies. Likewise, the chorus: Let down and hanging around. Crushed like a bug in the ground is fairly self-explanatory. And maybe even foreshadowing. Winston's so anticipated defeat. However, there are some verses that aim at a more rebellious view, like: One day I am gonna grow wings A chemical reaction Hysterical and useless Wings as a symbol for freedom, a chemical reaction as an allusion to change and transformation, and the last verse as the strength of the eventual wrath of the proles. Useless because if they don't rebel, they are in fact of no use.
