We define self-compassion as:<break strength="x-strong"/> <emphasis level="strong">“A sensitivity to our own suffering coupled with a commitment o feel our suffering and respond to it with care”</emphasis><break strength="x-strong"/> So the invitation is to allow ourselves to move towards our emotions, even when it’s hard to do. Once we learn how to recognize our emotions and be present with them we are able to practice distress tolerance and overcome our challenges.<break strength="x-strong"/> Distress tolerance is essentially our ability to be with our emotions, rather than run away from them. You are invited to practice distress tolerance following the compass of “challenging but not overwhelming”.<break strength="x-strong"/> Engage with your suffering in “bite size” portions, just a bit at a time, so you are challenged, but not overwhelmed by it. Make sure to take a break when you need to.<break strength="x-strong"/> A more detailed description of distress tolerance can be found in the self-compassion video, as well as in the lessons of session 2, which focus on developing helpful ways of being with our emotions.<break strength="x-strong"/> <break strength="x-strong"/> <break strength="x-strong"/> <break strength="x-strong"/> </speak>
