<speak> <emphasis level="strong">The two psychologies of compassion for self and others</emphasis><break strength="x-strong"/> <break strength="x-strong"/> There are two profound steps that are taken on the path to compassion:<break strength="x-strong"/> Engagement; moving towards awareness of suffering, and willingness to make mindful contact with suffering, rather than trying to avoid it or dissociate.<break strength="x-strong"/> Action/Alleviation – willingness to utilize skills and coping mechanisms in order to take action to reduce the suffering of self and others.<break strength="x-strong"/> We often notice that we want to skip the first step of engaging our suffering, that we tend to want to avoid our emotions and distract ourselves from the discomfort it brings us and to quickly “fix” how we feel. Unfortunately, when we do so our suffering only grows.<break strength="x-strong"/> The invitation is to feel our emotions first, notice what is happening with patience, care and curiosity.
