Hello Everyone. My name is Gabriela and my speech is called Highschool Indeciveness All that glitters is not gold. Imagine a dream school where you meet new people, “the best” professors, and have everything you have ever wanted. When it comes to the knowledge of high schools, I have always known the ranks of high schools just from living in Philly for a long time. My indecisiveness in choosing what high school to attend began in early October of my 8th-grade year. I had many opportunities and options when it came to high schools, but central high school was my dream school. For those who don’t know, Central is Philly's #1 high school. With the help of school ranking, I was determined to choose schools to apply to “the top best high schools.” But, when I heard about Parkway Center City Middle College from a lady counselor, she told me that the school prepares students for college. It had me thinking and decided to apply, but the school rank was not the best, a 7 out of 10. After meeting up with the counselor, I bumped into someone I talked to about high schools. This person says, “Oh, I am going to Central, the SCHOOL to go to.” Out of concern, I asked, “ do you have other choices for high schools?” “Nope,” answered the pupil.“Well, ok. But, you are required to apply for five schools…” So we ended with that. This person was not prepared for high school applications. Just by saying something does not make it true. An awkward conversation it was, but after all, there is a literal process for applying for high schools. In the end, I did not get accepted to Central, but I am now at Parkway. I do not regret anything and I am happy I am here. Parkway is not far from home, which made me rethink if I would really go to Central if I was accepted. Those who wonder how I am here in this class and CCP, I am a dual enrollment student, and I could not have done it without the special program Parkway offers. I get to experience the life of a high school and college student. I mean, isn't it better to become experienced and gain knowledge? Being at Parkway for four years, I will graduate with a high school diploma and associate degree, and it is something Central does not offer as the #1 school. Always there is problems when trying to make the right choices. Most of the time we don't really know what we want when rankings are made. Moreover we fail to consider our needs ,values , and tastes which are not the same as another's. For me, I came to realize there was never the best school, and focusing on school ranks is the biggest mistake I could not believe I made. The reason behind this is because school rankings never mattered and never determined how a school actually is. So, Value is not inherent, but what you make of something. Thank you.
