LONG-AWAITED POST!!! HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT YOUR ENGLISH IS ACTUALLY IMPROVING THROUGH IMMERSION? Immersion-based learning simply means, as you have seen in the photo, learning a language in the most NATURAL and AUTHENTIC way possible. It is by no means the bestest way to achieve mastery over a language as you will get to truly experience all the aspects of the language you happen to be learning. When some people first chance upon the word, they might assume that in order for you to be fully immersed into a language, you need to go a particular country where the language you are trying to learn is spoken. While this view has an element of truth to it, I am here to break it to you that this is not the only way. You don't necessarily need to go to any county to learn any language, unless you are affluent or boneheaded enough to shell out your money, of course. In fact, language immersion can take many forms like watching movies/tv series, talking to strangers and so forth. Now that we know what we are dealing with, we can discuss when the effects of immersion start to kick in. Honestly, I have no idea when because, firstly, the matter at hand is a bit prickly, and, secondly, it is heavily congruent upon how much time you are willing to spend immersing yourself into the language you are learning. In the case of English, I don't happen know exactly how much time you should spend, but I do know, though that it is a lot, 24/7 if possible. Yeah, I am including your sleep hours as well because you should dream in English, which only happens, unless you are a native speaker, when you work on your damn language skills. Luckily for you, I came up with my own metrics to figure out if my English is getting better as I am immersing myself. In my case, it is somehow linked to what words and how often I use them subconsciously, without thinking. To better illustrate this point, take a look at the words I have highlighted above: prickly, shell out, boneheaded and others. These are the words whose meaning I have either looked up once, but can't really remember when or I just know without knowing. As paradoxical the latter answer might seem, this is true for most of the words I know. I just know without knowing. Of course, I nearly always double check them to make sure that I am using those words correctly, and nearly always I do use them correctly. In short, this is how it works for me and probably for most people. Also, we might instantly get the meaning of a word the second we see the word in the context. To know if your English is improving through immersion, ask yourself the following questions: Do I speak without thinking? Do I know the words without knowing? Can I guess the meaning of words from the context most of the time? If your answer to all of these questions is a BURNING YES, then you are immersing yourself enough. Great job! #IMMERSION #LANLEARPROCESS
