<speak> <emphasis level="strong">Mindfulness and attention</emphasis><break strength="x-strong"/> <break strength="x-strong"/> Mindfulness indeed has to do with how we pay attention, in what direction we hold our attention, and the emotional texture through which we pay attention.<break strength="x-strong"/> Our attention can be moved, like a spotlight, and zoom in and out, like a camera lens.<break strength="x-strong"/> You can try it right now, as you read these lines gently direct your attention to your left toe (wiggle it a bit).<break strength="x-strong"/> Now to your right toe (wiggle it a bit)<break strength="x-strong"/> Then your left knee.<break strength="x-strong"/> And your right knee.<break strength="x-strong"/> Now gently direct your attention at the top of your head, and express a half smile on your face.<break strength="x-strong"/> The invitation is to recognize you can move your attention around, to pay attention to where your attention is going, and notice your emotional texture.<break strength="x-strong"/> If we observe our life through an emotional texture of anger, we’ll be angry. However, if we observe our life through an emotional texture of care, we will feel more calm and safe.<break strength="x-strong"/> If our attention wonders, that’s OK, that’s what the brain does. we can gently bring it back to task, without judgement, as a practice of self-compassion.
