The most popular student in her class, Kyoko Hori, dresses casually at home and takes care of the chores. Izumi Miyamura, the quiet kid in class, learns of her secret one day while escorting her younger brother Sota home from the hospital with a nosebleed. Hori learns that Miyamura has tattoos and body piercings outside of school, but the two vow to keep each other's identities a secret. As Miyamura continues to stop by to play with Sota, they get close and become friends. During this time, Miyamura, who is on his way to assist Hori in purchasing eggs during a flash sale, unintentionally reveals his true look to Yoshikawa. In the meantime, Miyamura befriends Toru Ishikawa, a classmate, despite the fact that he has emotions for Hori, and informs him that he intends to confess to her. Hori approaches Miyamura after noticing his distancing himself from her in an effort to uphold her reputation. After Hori explains why she rejected Ishikawa, the two reconcile. After realizing she doesn't know Miyamura's first name while speaking to her mother, Hori devises a number of indirect methods to find out before Miyamura gives it to her. The student council at the school requests Hori's assistance with their papers. They subsequently accuse her of losing the budget report, but Miyamura disproves their claims by revealing that Remi, one of the group members, lost it after she accidentally bumped into him (as well as headbutting the president, Sengoku). While Hori admits she assisted the student council out of guilt for having teased Sengoku as a young child, they both apologize. Hori receives a CD from Miyamura for her birthday as the pupils start their third year. Hori, Ishikawa, and Yoshikawa unintentionally create a group with Miyamura when he remembers his dark background of always being by himself at school for a class assignment, and he finds he has them to call his friends. Ishikawa, who he confides in, affirms their friendship. The following day, Remi jokingly tells Hori that she is thinking about dating Miyamura, and Hori reacts angrily to him. Hori and Miyamura compare hands after school, and she almost confides her sentiments to him. Miyamura denies having feelings for Hori when Ishikawa confronts her about it, and the two fight as a result. The two make amends, and Miyamura tells Yoshikawa that Hori was to blame for their altercation. When Ishikawa assists Sakura in picking up papers she threw out as summer approaches, she falls in love with him. Ice cream is given to Miyamura by Hori, who also provides some to Ishikawa and Sengoku. After losing a game with their pals, Hori and Miyamura are made to buy drinks for their friends, with Ishikawa mistaking what transpired between them. After school, Hori discovers that Miyamura is exclusively agitated and hostile around his middle school classmate Shindo. She and Ishikawa encounter Shindo in the city. Later, Hori becomes ill, and Miyamura tends to her while learning more about the loneliness she feels. Miyamura eventually admits his feelings for her. Sunaware that the other woman was Shindo's girlfriend, Chika, ota claims to have seen Miyamura talking to her. After getting agitated and avoiding Miyamura, Hori finally throws her textbook at him. The two make amends to one another when Miyamura shows up at her house to return the textbook. Miyamura is given the opportunity to explain by Hori before being cut off by her father, Kyosuke. Miyamura's relationship with Hori is confirmed, and they start dating. Ishikawa seems depressed after discovering this, but he assures Miyamura that they are still friends. Sakura confides in Remi about her crush on Ishikawa, fearing that she is less gorgeous than her. Remi defends her and encourages her. When Miyamura spends the night at Hori's residence, the other students learn that they are dating. He makes the decision to chop off his hair and give up wearing spectacles out of concern for how his reputation is influencing hers. After school, Miyamura gives Hori her first kiss while Shindo shares candy with the two of them. Later, the girls notice Miyamura's new appearance, and first-year student Honoka Sawada declares him to be a competition for Hori's affections. When Miyamura finds out that Sawada is his next-door neighbor and that her brother passed away a year ago, he is more sympathetic to her plight and starts to form a bond with her. In return for Ishikawa lending Sakura his jersey to cover a stain, Sakura bakes cookies. Yuki, who is envious, begs Miyamura for assistance in baking cupcakes; Ishikawa encourages her to bake more even though the cupcakes end up burning. Hori eagerly awaits Miyamura's return as he travels to Hokkaido for five days to attend a funeral. This is especially true when Hori's phone runs out of battery. They share a heartfelt embrace the day he returns. Hori is advised by the females to be submissive around Miyamura by acting terrified in a horror film, but she instead scares Miyamura. Miyamura tells Hori that he loves her for who she is when she becomes humiliated. They have romantic intercourse as he stays the night at her home. When Miyamura runs with Tanihara, a bully from middle school, he continues to talk down to him until Hori beats him up together with his friend. She keeps pushing Miyamura to treat her rougher, and when he reluctantly caves, Tanihara, and his pals are unintentionally scared. Mizouchi first rejects Miyamura because of his crush on Hori, but eventually, the two are able to warm up to one another. In his dream, Tanihara thinks back to a time when he held Miyamura accountable for the loss of their school's bunnies. He pays him a visit at his cake store, is welcomed with open arms and is told to come back while feeling regret for his conduct. After some time has passed, Miyamura and Hori look back on their time in middle school with more fondness now that she has gotten to know everyone. Hori is envious of Miyamura's closeness to Tanihara, Shindo, and the other boys. When Sakura finds out that Ishikawa and Yuki are allegedly dating, she is saddened, and Yuki withdraws within herself since she is unsure of how to be open about her emotions for him. Ishikawa informs her about Sakura's confession to him without seeking a response. He then tries to cheer Yuki up by mentioning all the wonderful qualities of snow (or "Yuki") and how eager they are for it to fall. Later, Sengoku comforts a devastated Sakura over her rejection. Iura's sister is revealed to the group, and the lads make an effort to become closer to Yanagi. In spite of his early concerns, Miyamura grows close to Yanagi. Miyamura was initially concerned about losing his relationships with the boys. Sawada begins to feel more at ease around the males but struggles with the obnoxious and unpleasant Iura. She worries he hates her when he discreetly assists her one day while he's ill, but the next day he's back to normal. Motoko, Iura's sister, is demoralized by her teacher's assertion that she won't be admitted to the high school of her choice, but Iura encourages her. As they converse, Hori assists him in tutoring her at his request. Each sibling secretly hopes the other doesn't really dislike them. Hori invites Miyamura to join them for Christmas dinner, but he declines, citing obligations at work, much to the dismay of Sota and Kyosuke. Toru discusses his love for Yuki with Sengoku and Iura, explaining that even if they aren't romantically involved, he is happy with the way things are right now. Later, when they go to play at his house, Yashiro, the housekeeper for the Ishikawa family, starts to bother them, which makes them feel even more anxious and ashamed. Sengoku's fear of bugs makes him dread going to see Remi. Hori considers what will occur once they graduate from high school. Each of the characters enjoys resting with their families and loved ones on Christmas. Before departing for work, Miyamura spends a brief period of time with the Hori family. On their way home, Hori expresses her desire to remain with him even after they graduate, to which he replies that they ought to get married. As they reflect on their future, the two continue to spend New Year's together. The students clear out their lockers as the conclusion of the school year draws near. Remi wants to go on a trip with the rest of her friends, but she is concerned that they might drift apart in the future. Her friends comfort her that they will all stay friends. Miyamura muses on how different his and the other students' school experiences may have been if he hadn't unintentionally run upon Hori. During Sengoku's speech at the graduation ceremony, Miyamura unintentionally sneezes, generating a commotion. He then addresses his former self, saying that he would no longer turn a blind eye to who he once was. While Sakura expresses her gratitude to Ishikawa, Sawada bids adieu to Hori. Yanagi talks to Yuki about the possibility of their group going on a trip together at some point. Motoko looks to be walking Iura home as Kyosuke arrives to play pranks on Miyamura and Hori, and she notices her brother's altered demeanor at school. Together, Miyamura and Hori leave the house as he muses over all the things he adores about her, the things she has done to encourage him to come out of his shell, and what he may do to express his gratitude.
