It took eight years for Charlotte to realize that she had hated humanity. Eight years of pain, of torment, of torture, of seeing the world for how it truly was. Eight life-sucking, heart-wrenching, stomach-turning years of living. At a mere eight years old, Charlotte decided she wanted an end to the little thing called “living”. It had been years since the war between humans and monsters. A war between two different species didn’t surprise Charlotte. How could different species live in peace when humans didn’t even get along with each other? Humans long lost their ability to use magic, and some started to question this part of history. It would only be a matter of time until it was regarded as nothing more than a fantasy. Yet, the legend of Mount Ebbott was one that always remained the same. Those who climbed up the mountain would never return. At a mere eight years old, Charlotte decided to test this legend out for herself. What a saddening thing for anyone to even consider. It took approximately seven days for Chara to recover from her injuries from her tumble to the Underground, but seven hours to already be relentlessly bothered by the monster who had found her. When she had first fallen, she was surprised to see herself…well, see herself period. She wasn’t too much into the whole “religion” thing, but her surroundings did not look much like heaven…or hell, if that’s where God sent her to really test her unlucky draw in the game called life. The first thing she had seen was some sort of goat, but a bipedal…not a farm animal-like one. She wasn’t dead, but surely, her fall must have made her hallucinate. Either way, it didn’t take long for her to pass out in said goat-boy thing’s arms. When she had woken up, she woke up to the same creature. Quickly she realized what had happened was not a fever dream of some sort. Letting out a scream in terror, the girl threw a pillow at this…being, not hard enough for harm, but enough for her to tire herself out already. “Calm down, please!! I don’t wanna hurt you.” The thing could TALK?! “Mama told me not to bother you, but I wanted to make sure you were feeling better!” Silence. Very, very, awkward silence hung in the air for a few minutes that felt like an eternity as the human just…stared at the other child with her fearful crimson eyes. “My name’s Asriel!” Deciding he was being genuine and did not want to hurt her, the human let out a breath before shakily speaking up. He deserved to know her name, only to be fair. That being said, if this was her new life, she felt like she needed a new name to truly get a fresh start. She also decided that he was not a thing, but rather a someone. A someone that seemed genuinely kind and interested in her with no intent of causing harm. That was new. “My name is Chara.” “Wowww! I thought you couldn’t talk or that you don’t understand monster language. Sooo, Mama told me something else, she told me-” “You’re a monster?” “You’re a human?” The two said in unison. And with that, the questions poured from each child before the human wanted to rest some more to fully soak this in. For the next seven days, Asriel was the only person that Chara would speak to, that Chara would look directly at, for Chara to finally bond with. And every night, Asriel sat in the room the human was recovering in, right at the edge of her bed. “Chara?” “Asriel?” “It’s so cool to finally see a human! I’m glad I found you. I hope we can be friends.” “Me too.” What an interesting effect of a failed suicide attempt. It took six weeks for Chara to finally be revealed to the public, no longer kept a secret only known by the royal family, guards, and other staff. Chara could not believe that of all people, she was living with the royal family of all monsters. But most of all, she could not believe how loving and welcoming they were to her. While she trusted Asriel fairly quickly, she did not trust the king or queen so quickly. She hardly spoke to them the first weeks she had arrived, only mere “thank you”’s and “I’m sorry”’s and “that’s fine” now and then. While Toriel wanted to nurture the child like her own the second she laid eyes on her, Asgore was slightly skeptical at first. Humans trapped his people in the Underground years ago, and there were a few monsters who still showed resentment towards humans. However, seeing how well his son bonded with this child, he realized that it was living proof that humans and monsters could indeed live in harmony. For the first time in many years, he felt genuine hope for his people. When Chara was introduced to the Underground just short of two months after she had fallen, the vass majority looked at her with the same hope the king did. There was a prophecy in which stated that all monsters would be freed from the Underground by an angel who had seen the surface. And to them, Chara was that angel. She would be the one to finally free them all, just like everyone had hoped and dreamed of for years. That night, Chara and Asriel laid awake in their room after another long day in the Underground. “Chara?” “Yes, Asriel?” “I’m so glad you’re gonna free us all one day!” “...Me too, Asriel.” What a massive amount of pressure for the girl.
