Located about three hours from Tbilisi, the Gergeti Church is probably be the most iconic place in all of Georgia. What makes this church so special is its stunning location on a hilltop and the backdrop of the enormous snow-capped mountains. You can reach the chapel on a two-hour long hike from the town of Stepantsminda, where you’ll also find a large selection of hotels, bars and restaurants. The trail leads along lush green meadows and offers some of the most impressive views of the nearby mountain peaks. If you are feeling more adventurous, there are also plenty of longer hikes that push deeper into the mountains along the Russian border. After the Gergeti church, we’ll head to Sighnaghi... Sighnaghi looks a bit like like a Tuscan hilltop village and is easily one of the most beautiful places in Georgia. The town is built on a steep hilltop and will make you feel like you just stepped back in time. The cobblestone streets are lined with beautiful historic buildings and medieval chapels. The city is also the center of the famous Khaketi wine region. Just a few minutes outside of the city walls, you’ll find a wide selection of traditional cellars and wineries, where you can go on a guided tour and taste some of the local specialties. Below the city, in the Alazani Valley, you’ll also find some of the most beautiful monasteries in all of Georgia. Now, after Sighnanghi, let’s go to the .... MTSKHETA Located just about 20 kilometers outside of Tbilisi, Mtskheta is definitely worth a visit. The city used to be the capital of Georgia and has played an important role in the evolution of Christianity in the country. For that reason, there are lots of religious sites scattered all over the town... with the most important one being the Sveti-Tskhoveli located right in the city center. The church is protected by UNESCO and is said to be the second largest religious building in all of Georgia. Another highlight you should definitely visit is the Jvar Monastery.
