Fatigue Management: Driving Fatigue Awareness Driver’s fatigue is a leading source of traffic accidents in the world. Because of this PDO has setup various barriers and methods to ensure that all its employees are operating in the safest circumstances and always given the proper support no matter what situation they are in. This course aims to raise awareness about the causes and effects of driver’s fatigue as well as outline methods to reduce fatigue related MVI’s. The contents of this course include: • Responsibilities of fatigue management • Understanding driver fatigue • Managing driver fatigue Section 1: Responsibilities When it comes to drivers’ fatigue, there are two parties that hold responsibility for the driver’s condition. These are: the organization responsibility to the employees driving for company businesses, which include anything work related, such as: • The hours of work or the workload that employees who dr ives must cover • The environment that driver must work in • And the journey manager and supervisors’ respon sibility to the drivers The other party is the employee’s driving related responsibility for his own well-being, and these include everything that is non-work related, such as: • The employee’s situation and lifestyle • Any medical disorders that the employee has that can in fluence his safe driving, including prescribed medication if employee is taking. The Employer (further refer as the Company) is responsible for three things: • Information • Identification • And work schedule The Company is responsible for informing the employees about: • Their workplace • The type of work that they will be doing • The weather conditions at the location • And the risks of working in a desert environment Finally, the Company must have mechanisms in place to manage drivers that are suffering from fatigue. The Company is responsible for identifying • personal problems that can harmfully affect the driver ’s safety performance • As well as promoting the drivers “work – life balance” Finally, the Company is responsible of ensuring work schedules that enable the drivers to obtain a • Healthy quantity and quality of sleep • As well as ensuring the number and length of journe ys are rest periods are in accordance with Road Safety Standard SP2000. The next in line is the journey manager, whose responsibilities are, but not limited to: • Being alert to signs of drowsiness before a journey is und ertaken • To brief the driver on the procedure in case he feels fatigue during the journey • To Ensure breaks are taken at the appropriate time and lo cation • To be aware of certain high-risk driving times. The final person in this chain of command are the supervisors. The supervisor’s responsibility are, but not limited to: • Identify any unusual behavior that may indicate stress , fatigue, or personal problems • Comply and use the mechanisms in place to deal with a driv er that present themselves for duty but are suffering from fatigue • Analyze the driver’s behavior, and conduct counse ling and other countermeasures to prevent fatigue cases • Ensure that work schedules and journeys comply within road safety standard. Now that we have finished the organizations responsibilities, the following points will be about the driver responsibilities. PDO and company driver are responsible for: • Complying with PDO fatigue management Plan • Using the breaks that are provided to rest and recupe rate. • Ensuring that they get enough rest and sleep when off du ty • Must present themselves fit for duty • Finally, employees must recognize personal signs of fatigu e (that will be discussed in next module). If these symptoms are reoccurring, employees must discuss it with a supervisor and seek medical advice. Quiz: You will know be given a quiz on the content in section 1. Try to answer correctly.
