1. A key to improving emotional health and removing the stigma of mental distress is to make the signs and symptoms recognizable, understandable, and most importantly in the workplace environment, manageable. When someone experiences a physical injury, or illness, the signs and symptoms are clearly recognizable. In fact, they are often difficult to miss and clearly inhibit the tasks a person can do. 2. When someone experiences emotional distress or psychological ill health, the signs are not so obvious unless we look a little more closely. 3. To help improve our ability to recognize those in distress and provide them the support they need, we have borrowed a concept from physical health care. 4. If someone is very unwell physically, they are taken to hospital. They're monitored closely so they’re able to stabilize and return to health. often difficult to miss and clearly inhibit the tasks a person can do. 5. When people are emotionally distressed, they are often not recognized as being in ill health by those around them. Emotional distress is most apparent in the way people's behavior changes, and often people are thought of as disruptive or withdrawn, rather than unwell. 6. To prevent this from happening, we need to notice and respond to others behavior and feelings. You do not need to be a doctor to reach out to someone on your team. All you need is a way to recognize who needs help and direct them to where they can get it. 7. There are three simple steps. First, identify the signs. Notice if anything is changed in the person's behavior. Is she distant? Does she seem sad? Does he seem irritable? Has he withdrawn from the team? 8. Next, connect with the person. Find a quiet place to talk. Be non-intrusive, simply ask; I've noticed that you're not your usual self, is there something wrong? is there anything I can do to help? Finally, understand the way forward together. Listening in itself can be a tremendous help. However, some people will need additional support. 9. Ferrero offers a free and confidential Employee Assistance Programme called LifeWorks. Encourage someone in need to reach out to LifeWorks to get help. 10. As you assist others, know that LifeWorks is also there to support you should you need help as you aid your colleagues. 11. Remember the three simple steps. Identify the signs. Connect with the person. Understand the way forward together.
