My Fellow Indians, As I bid adieu to the office of The President of India, I am really grateful and overwhelmed to all the people of India and the members of parliament who choose me as their President 5 years ago. Having been in Public Life for 50 years, I didn’t really think that someday I’ll be your President. I am humbled by their kindness and affection. I have received much more from the country than I have given. For that, I will remain ever indebted to the people of India. I whole heartedly congratulate my successor Sh/Smt ________ the President-to-be and wish him success and happiness in the years to come. My fellow citizens, During the last five years, I had the opportunity to interact with a number of citizens from different fields and walks of life. I received great respect, affection and support from you and I convey my heartfelt gratitude. Five years ago, when I took the oath of office of the President of the Republic, I promised to preserve, protect and defend our Constitution, not just in word but also in spirit. Each day of these five years, I was conscious of my responsibility. The interactions kept me focused and inspired. I strove hard. How successful I was in discharging my responsibilities will be judged, over the time, by the critical lens of history. I believe that I, in the last 5 years I have performed my duties upon which I took the oath. When I gained interest in National Politics, the world was going through its worst times of the 21st Century. The global corona virus pandemic outbreak. We lost very eminent politicians during the course of that time. One of the eminent politicians I could only remember is Former President and Bharat Ratna Pranab Mukkherjee who served as our president from 2012-2017. He was an exceptional man and a living Encyclopedia. I didn’t have the opportunity to work with nor did I have the opportunity to interact with him. But his contribution to Indian Politics cannot be described in words. My Fellow Indians, India is the world’s largest democracy and Mother of all democracies. Elections in our country have, invariably, impressed all observers for their free and fair nature and for the enormous mobilization undertaken for their conduct. Elections are now bringing in Governments that are mostly coalitions and legislatures composed of many parties. There are regional aspirations as well. The Constitution of our country must be fully respected and there should be adherence to the Fundamental Duties, elaborated in the Constitution, which call for excellence, harmony, rejecting violence and upholding the unity and integrity of India. We should never insult this sacred text. In the last 50 years of my public life, The Constitution of India was my Sacred Text My temple has been the Parliament of India; and My passion has been the service of the people of India. Fellow Citizens, My Political life was inspired by many politicians irrespective of which political party they belonged, and have shaped me what I am today as President of this great country. Among them were: Sh. Jawaharlal Nehru Smt. Indira Gandhi Sh. Pranab Mukherjee Loknayak Sh. Jayprakash Narayan Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee And Sh. Lal Krishna Advani Dr. Avul Pakeer Janulabuddin Kalam I firmly believe that one should study them and read about their exceptional life. My Fellow citizens, my circle of Public life started in the small locality of New Delhi and ended in the foothills of Rashtrapati bhavan. This journey has been my greatest achievements of all time. Always remember, the words of Jayprakash Narayan who said and I quote, my interest is not in the capture of power, but in the control of power by the people.” Do not fight for the power, the faith of India lies on its citizens. The decision to decide who’ll be the leader lies on the citizens of India. Dear Citizens, You have always shown an ability to understand events happening around you; expressed your views and I am sure you will not fail in building a strong, progressive, cohesive and corruption-free India. Corruption is the enemy of development, and of good governance. It must be got rid of. Both the Government and the people at large must come together to achieve this national objective. Today, innovation is the key to change. It is, therefore, appropriate that the ongoing decade was declared as one of innovation in India. A spirit of creativity should exist at every level of society. A lot rests on our educational institutions, research organizations and scientific bodies, to come out with new technologies and new innovations. The nation has high expectations from them. We must also remember that the work of nation-building is endless. Generations come and generations go, but the life of the nation goes on. Every generation during its time must make a qualitative difference. Swami Vivekananda said, and I quote, "Our ancestors did great things in the past, but we have to grow into a fuller life and march beyond even their great achievements." Unquote. So let us all unitedly resolve to take our nation to higher heights! Fellow citizens, during my 5 years in Rashtrapati bhavan I leant a lot and tried to build a humane and happy township. We found happiness that is associated with joy and pride, smiling and laughter, good health, feeling of safety and positive actions. As I get ready to leave, I’ll be taking my 50 years of Public life memories and the love you all gave it to me. I am really overwhelmed and proud to have been served my country in this position. Dear Citizens, as I speak to you tomorrow, it will be as a Common man and not as the President of the Republic of India. As I retire from public life I am not retiring from my social life. I was, am and will always be available to the people of India whenever they require me. I will always ready to serve my country. My concluding lines would be; Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end. With these words, I wish you peace, prosperity and happiness in your lives in a prosperous India. As I step down, I once again thank you profusely for the warmth and affection showered on me. THANK YOU. JAI HIND!
