They seek a learning environment that triggers and increase their learning capacity with teaching practices and altering strategies. In other words, today’s students want to be part of an educational setup that is impactful and one that offers a sense of achievement whilst still interactive and adaptive with their teachers and fellow students. It is therefore important that every teacher ensures that their students are engaged and active players throughout their school years. Various ways ensure these needs are covered. First, it is important to highlight the purpose of schooling which is to ensure that students have access to optimum development for living democratically, creatively and morally in a democratic society. Learning environment One of the most creative aspects of teaching is developing a positive and engaging learning environment for the students. The term learning environment in the scenario comprises various components such as teaching and learning goals, learners’ characteristics, activities that support learning, a culture that directly infuses a learning environment and assessment strategies that measure and drive learning. A student’s learning capabilities can be affected by various factors such as physical, cultural, psychological and social factors. When a learning environment is not conducive to acquiring new skills and knowledge, the students have a hard time remaining interested or engrossed. Every teacher must incorporate an arsenal of strategies that provide their students with a positive experience and inoculate them students against a negative attitude. The approach counteracts the negative and aids the learners in getting out of the negative spiral. When a teacher makes their students feel accepted, appreciated and important members of the learning environment, there tends to be an improvement in their students’ performance. When students feel like they are a contributing part of their lessons they appreciate and accept viewpoints and therefore have an open mindset while learning which helps them solve learning issues earnestly. A conducive learning environment creates a positive ambience where the students feel engaged and motivated. Teachers should aim at creating an ideal learning environment which promotes interaction with the students hence inaugurating a sense of support. Factors that Promote a Positive Learning Environment Supportive Learning Culture/Academic Curricula As a teacher, one of the ways to promote a positive learning environment is by establishing a positive learning culture. A teacher should ensure that every student feels connected to the learning process. All students should feel that they play a major role with their contributions during learning making them an important sector of the supportive learning culture. The future of schooling seems to be leaning towards modern technology. Therefore, teachers could create online forums where the students could discuss topics and share their concerns amongst themselves and also express their ideas about various topics discussed in class. Teaching methods Addressing Student’s Needs/ social-emotional skills For students to be tough with a positive attitude and to facilitate their progress, their teachers must look out for their needs and ensure that they are taken care of. These needs include belonging and love, security and order, personal power and competence, freedom and novelty and fun. When a teacher incorporates these intrinsic student needs, their learners tend to be more engaging and happier. Creating a Positive Energy Social-emotional skills Students respond better to praise rather than punitive measures. Therefore, teachers should avoid humiliating their students and instead motivate them. Teachers should give their learners the freedom to express their opinions and discourage their students from humiliating their peers. Most learners drop out of certain courses due to teasing and harassment. Providing Feedback/ Skills and Competencies The best way for a teacher to interact with their students is by providing feedback. Feedback helps learners track their progress and also enables them to correct their learning strategy accordingly. This is because, when teachers give feedback to their students, they highlight their areas of weakness and improve on them.
