the topic of my thesis is investigating gender portrayal in drama serials through capability approach. Capability approach is based on the principle of what an individual is able to do and to be. So capabilities are the opportunities, options, and freedoms that an individual can undertake to engage in activities they want to do or things they want to be. Another important aspect of the capability approach is the institutions. Institutions are humanly-devised constraints. Formal institutions are common law and regulations whereas informal institutions are norms and self imposed codes of conduct. We have institutions all around us and we can not imagine functioning in a vacuum where there are no institutions. SO, these institutions impact our capabilities. Okay so now is the time to move towards gender. Gender is a socially and culturally determined construct. As a result, men and women are expected to behave in certain ways in a particular society or culture. These expectations and constraints impact what a person can do or what a person can be. so now it can be understood how closely intertwined gender, capability, and institutions are. Because I wanted to analyze the drama serials using the capability approach, I had to come up with my own list of capabilities relevant to gender portrayal. These are the capabilities in my list. Let's take the example of the capability “senses, imagination, and thought”. I have further divided this capability into 2 aspects. First is the ability to use imagination and thought. Second is decision making ability. Lets pick up decision making ability and Watch a video clip to understand when and how someone can not make or enact decisions even when they want to.
