Hi, this is Tamseel Zahra and my topic for the thesis is a comparative analysis of the learning methods of university students in Lahore. Peter Honey and Alan Mumford developed their theory based on the work and ideas of Kolb and his experiential learning cycle. Essentially, Kolb believed that we learn from our experiences and we reflect on our experiences. We get a greater understanding from the reflection which gives us learning. On the flip side, Honey and Mumford developed their theory based on the introduction of 4 different types of learning styles which they believed individuals preferred., activists, reflector, theorist, and pragmatist. Now, the belief was that learning could be maximized once the individuals are aware of their preferred style. So, to maximize the returns on learning, the individual must understand the type of learning style that best suits him or her. Let’s break down the 4 one by one: • Activists involve themselves fully and without bias in new experiences. They enjoy the here and now and are happy to be dominated by immediate experiences. • Reflectors like to stand back to ponder experiences and observe them from many different perspectives. They collect data, both first-hand and from others, and prefer to analyze them thoroughly and think about them from every possible angle before coming to any definite conclusions. • Theorists like to analyze and synthesize. They assimilate and convert disparate facts and observations into coherent, logical theories. Their philosophy prizes rationality and logic above all. • Pragmatists are keen on trying out ideas, theories, and techniques to see if they work in practice. They search out new ideas and take the first opportunity to experiment with applications. If I have to summarize them in one word then consider activists to be the ones with concrete experiences, Reflectors with reflective observation, Theorist with abstract conceptualization, and Pragmatist with active experimentation. Now how does a student identify his learning style? Honey and Mumford introduced a learning style questionnaire to measure learning preferences in individuals aged 16+. The LSQ is based on David Kolb’s Learning Cycle theory which looks directly at how individuals learn, rather than their tendencies to learn. The questionnaire is available in 40 items and is designed to stimulate individuals and groups into thinking about how they prefer to take in information and learn from experiences; it follows the learning cycle (do; review; conclude & plan). As for the methodology, I had a sample size of 98 students so far with 67 females and the rest male. The mean age identified in the samples was of 20 years. The result showed a strong inclination towards the activist approach. If one had to identify the factors influencing their learning style then there are 4. And this is it. Thank you
