The International Convention for the Protection of Human Life at Sea (also known simply as: SOLAS, acronym for Safety of life at sea) is an international agreement aimed at protecting the safety of merchant shipping, with explicit reference to the safeguarding of human life at sea. The origins of this convention go back to the Titanic disaster, which occurred in the night between 14 and 15 April 1912, one of the first major maritime accidents, also because it was the first to be documented by the media and therefore to affect large masses of people.
