I grew up with my great grandfather all my life, he was like a second father to me and would spoil the hell out of me and my brother. Him and my grandmother are both German and grew up in Germany during the Second World War, my great grandfather never really talked about the war but my great grandmother would talk about it when me it my brother asked about it. About 5 years ago my great grandfather passed away because of cancer, after he passed he left most of his stuff to his children, my mother, and some things to me and my brother. a few weeks ago me and my brother were helping my great grandmother move some of her stuff and some of my great grandfathers old stuff out of the attic which consisted of old books, pictures, papers, and some clothes. To be honest some of the stuff was very cool, that was until my brother came across a box, about the size of a hat box hidden under some other junk and boxes. When we opened the box there was a layer of tissue paper on top and then some pictures. When we lifted the pictures up we saw there was a blue hat with reddish pink piping around the top, I instinctively picked up the hat and took a good look at it when my heart sunk. There at the front of the hat was a circular cockade at the top and below it, a wreath with an eagle in the middle grasping a Nazi swastika. I was flabbergasted and had no idea when to do or say until my brother grabbed the hat from my hands and was shocked as well and yelled for my great grandmother. When she came up to us she was shocked as well and began to tear up, after a while she told me that during the Second World War my great grandfather joined the Fire Police as an officer but did not help with the holocaust and was only a fire police officer. This absolutely shocked me because he never told us this nor did he ever let on that he was a Nazi during the Second World War. I will upload a picture of the hat and link it so anyone who wants to can see what the hat looks like.
