The Touch, 1617-1618 Touch is set in a sort of forge, where hundreds of weapons and armor are created, representing cold and hard. The figure squeezes the putto tightly to feel its soft skin. Touch, intact, is the best way to restore sensation (hard, soft, rough, hot, cold, wet, painful). The paintings represent Christ at the column, two universal judgments, a hunt and a surgical operation to indicate precisely the ability to feel pain or the heat of the fire. Together with the monkey, a symbol of man with limited intellect, the sense seems to have a negative meaning.
